I am no doubt no match for you in arguing a case however I have wrestled with myself over the concept of free speech and should it be ok for others to express whatever opinion they wanted. I used to feel that so long as it did not promote violence etc it was ok otherwise it should be banned, but then I realised that (I hope) the majority of people are reasonable people and that the outlandish views of some (not on this thread) can only be defeated if they are allowed to be expressed and argued. If we suppress free speech then we are on the slippery slope to thought police etc. If reasonable people had not been terrorised into silence in Germany between the wars then maybe, just maybe we would be in a different world today

One point that Salmon man said which relates directly to that, of course we can voice opinions on other peoples morals. If in my moral code it is perfectly ok to kill another human being for no reason, would you accept that?
As a general principle I agree with you. I did not advocate anything else. I merely pointed out that there is no such thing as free speech, and there isn't. We now appear to have "grown up" so much on this thread that we are openly saying that "we" (as in some people) hate the French and it is fine to say that provided we put a smiley face after it. I do not find xenophobia particularly amusing in any context, and particularly not when deliberately used to make a point that someone can say whatever they wish without consequences. I wonder if it would have been ok to type that "we" hate muslims, or black people, or people with disabilities, provided, of course, that we put a smiley face after it??? It is not in the least bit amusing then, is it? Why is it therefore amusing or adult to say it about anyone else?

With respect, that is complete bol***ks - and yet another logical fallacy.

No-one hates the French - we just like to tease them, as they do us.

So the fact that I am French and I find it abhorrent that people are allowed to be openly xenophobic and insulting is ok then is it? Would it also be ok if it was Mulsims, black people or people with disabilities. I am genuinely interested in knowing at what point horses got more human rights than people?

There was no respect and no teasing. Stating that you hate someone is not amusing.

Sorry Eloise - have just re-read and seen Jon's ironic post which ends "we all hate the French" and with which I ironically agreed - but it really was an affectionate joke

I am not in the least xenophobic, unlike those Continental bxxstards

One of the prices of free speech is that you have to listen to people who don't necessarily share your opinion.

I sometimes think that people who go on about prejudice, as shaky put it, doth Protest to much.

You defended statements made on the basis it was only "teasing". If you were not defending the statements, then where was the "teasing "? Or are you going to resort to more swearing when faced with a logical comment?

I think it must be you, because I cant see which statements I am supposed to defend.
