Re: The Join-In IT Query Thead

So this is the basic idea of home networking.

In our case the Router and DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)modem are all in ONE box.
So the desktop is cabled to the router and the laptop will connect wirelessly.

As mentioned previously you need to make sure the wireless is enabled on both router and laptop. Some times it can drop out, but a simple power cycle (reboot) of the router normally resolves this.

As the router handles the internet connection it needs to be on all the time.
You do NOT need to run or install any wizards to connect to the net.
Normally they come pre-configured to distribute IP addresses to the connected machines via DHCP ( Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). They also act as a DNS (Domain Name System)server, so converting IP addresses to "Friendly" names, ie Google.

From there it is relatively straightforward to share (on the RIGHT click options) network resources with all connected machines.

So hows that so far ?

Right click on the resource and select SHARE from the drop down.
You will need to specify the account(s), or simply use EVERYONE for ease.
The EVERYONE permission basically opens it up to anyone connected to your network of machine.

Well you know there's TWO basic types of click, LEFT and RIGHT.
Left normally selects and Right brings up the action menu.

The resource is what ever you want to share, so files, folders, drives or printers.

            Make sense..

Got it---it was what you meant by resource

on this router theres a wireless thing button on the front (thompson TG585 v8) which flashes orangey red when pressed--is that significant--hardly any instructions with the router either

                No idea.
Does your ISP have online assistance for it ?

TBH you shouldn't really need instructions as it's all web based.
If you log on to your router you may well find the help docs there.

Silly me, could of checked for my self

Anyway here's how they say to setup wireless:http://help.karoo.co.uk/display/2/kb....aspx?aid=1518

All down to how much you want to pay for them. They are pretty much horses-for-courses. You pay for what kind of performance you are looking for.

However, as a rule, ensure they support all the wrieless technologies, also ensure they cover all the Security options (WEP, WPA, WPA-2 etc).

Also, you can get them far cheaper than PC-World sell them for if you look online. But obviously if you buy them online then you are unlikely to receive them before next Tuesday. Also, Maplin & Comet have sales on at the moment so you might find what you want cheaper at those stores.

NOT the Belkin one as it's a CABLE router.
You need to Modem part as well.
That's what deals with your connection..

This will do what you want and is on offer on the web
