I'd just be happy that if all sentences were to be served in full ie life meaning life, 15 years meaning 15 years and so on, no time off for good behaviour and as Inca says no luxuries and certainly no segregation, and hard labour, let them work for their keep.

Yep, totally agree Sapphy, why protect a man who killed his own kids?
personally I would say put him in a women's prison and tell em he's a kiddy killer, but then I thought of the mess, and the cleaners and stuff

Just leave him in a room with a box in the corner, tell him that anytime between now and the next few years it will explode, watch the barsteward squirm.

It just irks me when you see that they have everything apart from the freedom to walk out of the door.
Be a good little murderer and you'll get a playstation
Be a nice little paedophile and we'll totally protect you, feed you,and throw in a TV for good measure.
If you get monies sent in...we will let you get all the sweets/luxuries available in the 'canteen'
And the ones who 'play the game' find life really isn't that bad.
There is a documentary on tonight about prisoners,,and one line in the advert for it makes me want to heave ,,'I'm better off in prison'. (says it all)

You may be amazed but a lot of what is being said about punishment and terms I can not disagree with. For some crimes life really should mean that.
Yes we all want a society free from crime but I do genuinely believe that serious crime is really no different now than when I was young, it is just with 24 hour news we become more aware of it and hence we perceive that it is not safe for kids to play out or walk to school etc.

Trust me on this one when I say to you that there are plenty of people for who prison is really no deterrence and many would rather do some time than a community sentence. for me however the thought of prison terrifies me. I do not think prison is as easy an option as you may think, certainly not the Cat A prisons etc.

Mob rule however is not the answer, as Leclerc said when the NOTW decided to name and shame pedophiles they got it wrong in some cases so that perfectly innocent people were attacked. We have laws, if you don't like them then make a fuss, write to your MP join lobby groups use what democracy we have but do not take the law into your own hands.

As for society, where did it start to go wrong and how do we fix it, I really do not know....I can certainly see a correlation going back to Thatcher but maybe that is my age and it goes back further.

Being brutally honest ( and yes,,i expect a backlash but heyho)...if any nonce or suchlike had done anything to anyone in my immediate family or anyone we knew..My Dad would have hunted them down and he,my Uncles,my brothers (and anyone else who wanted to),,would have made sure he/she 'realised the errors of their ways'!! Let's put it this way,,the person(s) would WISH the police got them first...and news travels fast in prisons (specially when you know someone on the inside,,be it P.O or prisoner)

its not really about politics, its about us being too scared to stand up and say that punishment is bloody shameful, we need to be imposing stricter sentencing and stiffer jails. Those who do wrong shouldn't be mollycoddled incase they get someone who is angry about that they have done having a pop at them.

If they dont want the consequences, dont do the crime, plain and simple.

We are all are too frightened to offend people or "breach human rights" (and before the backlash starts I am a member of amnesty international and believe in the fundementals of human rights) to deal with our wrong doers effectively.

When i was a kid I darent backchat an elder for fear of a clip round the lug or a short sharp slap to the back of the leg.. and what harm did it do me? I have never been in trouble with the police, I am employed in a position of trust, I have 3 sweet natured, polite talented children and they respect the police to the extent they call a copper Sir or Madam.

the point I am trying to make is, if I were to be robbed, beaten etc.. my assailant would be put in a prison and live better than I do.. where is the justice?

They should be punished, hence being in prison, they should be liable to the same problems coming out, be it phillpot, the Bulger Boys, Maxine Carr or Dr Crippen (yes I know hes dead), as the local yobbo who put a brick through the shop window in the main street.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander

if that is mob rule then sign me up!

Oh and on a side note, my mum grew up in the house next door to Dr Crippens, and Gran would tell them if they were bad the girls would go right (Holloway prison) and the boys left (pentenville).

Did you miss the one on offenders on ITV1 a few weeks back

the only addition I want to add on this one is the as a general rule, prison today is seen as a place to rehabilitate offenders, and I am not saying that in all cases this happens. As has been said on here, unless Philpott actually admits to what he has done then he will stay in prison for the rest of his life because without admitting to the crime you cannot even have your case heard. In the case of children, I've given two of the most cause celebre cases in England and Wales, and Scotland. I am fairly certain that having a tv in prison is a privilege and not a given and can be taken away. I was trying to look into that issue but the only article I have is this one from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19572726
"Family means that no one gets forgotten or left behind"
