Sorry to drag this up again. But after reading earlier about Bookie's absolute refusal to accept that Lowell's were being allowed to post, and indeed tried to tell everyone that they were shot down in flames and lasted about 15 minutes, I notice this wee contribution...

Hardly a "15 minutes of fame".

Perhaps Bookie needs to go to Specsavers? Seems there is a discrepency between the threads SHE sees and what everybody sees. She apparently can't even see the ads, FFS.

It doesn't effect 3.7. It doesn't even effect the previous 3.8.4, so is isolated to just 3.8.6 I think.

I agree though that minor patches are not a big issue. If the forum works well enough for you, then good.

vBulletin vuln gifts admin credentials to unwashed masses • The Register

Websites using software from vBulletin have been stung by a critical vulnerability that makes it trivial to steal credentials needed to administer site panels.

The flaw in version 3.8.6 of vBulletin makes it possible for anyone with a web browser to infiltrate a forum's back end, where sensitive data about users is often stored. The forumware giant issued a patch on Wednesday, but a simple Google search on Friday revealed that scores of users have yet to apply it, meaning their administrative user names and passwords are wide open.

Exploiting the bug is as easy as entering “database” (minus quotes) in the search box of a forum's FAQ page. Vulnerable sites respond by returning everything that's needed to view sensitive user information or make administrative changes.

The patch updates users to version 3.8.6 PL1. Users who want to make sure the fix has worked should check for the string “database_ingo,” which is removed once the new version has correctly been installed.
I repeat, It doesn't effect earlier versions.

Havent really been too worried about patches for minor flaws tbh, think when we moved to 3.7 it was a big job and we had to rewrite an awful lot of templates to recustomise things (as quite a lot on here is non standard like the profile pages etc which we just made to work better for the users) that we've been put off upgrading further until something really spanking and well tested comes out....VB4 doesnt do it for me so far, barring the CMS home page which I'd love to have! ...we've taken ideas from it and included them in our own ''special'' way.

Have had the VB3.8.6 patch alert showing on my admin panel for ageeeeeeeeeees, dunno if its a security error with 3.8 though which doesnt affect us on 3.7 - will get around to it one day we had a lot of problems with our old server hosts which meant a few cock ups and db errors, Since moving hosts we havent had any problems at all (worth the extra ££ I'm sure everyone will agree) and think we're so pleased with that the thought of messing with anything else and risking more problems fills us with dread lol.

Can you think about moving up to 3.8.x? Is that possible?

Unsupported 3.7 would not be good, but a 3.8.x upgrade would be much less of a trauma than a 4.x or complete software switch. Buy you some time if you like.

Nothing wrong with running older software if it works for you. The only BIG concern are the availability of security fixes. Like the recent mysql flaw found in 3.8.6, which ( Ithink) has now been patched?

good stuff should stop some paranoia

Was having a look at VB (as these issues are likely to affect us one day as 3.7 is becoming unsupported) and seeing as they have gone all commercial came across Welcome to XenForo! | XenForo Community which seems to be some of the old VB lads coding up a new forum platform, so will keep an eye on that, but as I have said before I'm pretty happy with 3.7 for now and any changes will test elsewhere before messing with here in any major way.

We did try out the tabbed forums previously but people werent keen so we ditched the idea, as we have grown it might be something worth looking at again as the forum home page is quite long scrolling now, and theres also a login through facebook and twitter style functionality we could look at if anyone thinks its worth it, but thats something we can discuss in site issues really...along with anything else people want to look at amending etc.

    That is better.

I still think that is a bit short, but their call.

At least people have a chance to come back and make corrections/amendments within a (semi) reasonable time period.

Not sure about recent ones, but mine went well before the upgrade.

It's possible that the vB 4 upgraded messed up the posting permissions for some people/groups. That sort of thing can happen.

If it can, then it may be one of the things fixed in the v 4.01 - 4.06 updates. I haven't looked at the changelogs for those updates, so can't say.

I suspect the explanation is the more obvious one though............

Granted. It's not an easy task, especially if the forum/templates/css is heavily customised and/or integrated into a CMS.

However, the impression I get from those threads is that they majorly dropped the ball and hadn't done more than cursory testing before leaping into the upgrade.

If they did do a lot of testing, then frankly that is even more damning.

(not that I can see anyone answering that with any honesty)

    Err.........................

    Nope.

More a case of making sure their dodgy "adverts" got displayed OK, instead of ensuring that it actually worked properly for users.
