Interesting thread, and I have signed the petition. I agree with FP in that the knee jerk reaction of abhorrence masks the underlining obscenity of people being in the position of having to sleep rough in this day and age and in this country anyway. As if we are saying, it is OK for people to sleep in doorways ?

My thoughts exactly!

People shouldn't be sleeping on the streets, it's a question of finding alternatives to that particular problem, not making the streets more comfy to sleep in!

There are people who refuse accommodation in hostels, etc. because they wouldn't be allowed to drink and/or use drugs. If indoor places are available for people to spend the night and people refuse to use them, then it would be justified to use devices to discourage them from being on doorways.

Is the gnome armed?

I guess it's fair to guard gnome man's land, and suspect your neighbours are thinking gnome or Mr Nice Guy!

On a serious point I'm delighted the spikes have been removed, not only for the fact of them having gone but for raising awareness of the homelessness issue.

There has been awareness for years, just not enough action. :rant: :rant: :rant:

I recall watching a variety of TV programs on the subject, from interviews with homeless people to some where people with homes spent some time (can't remember if it was a week :noidea: :confused2 living as homeless people. I also know someone who made a documentary about the homeless, must have been in the 80s or thereabouts! It's not exactly a new issue.

Very much not a new issue. The documentaries were I think two separate ones - I saw them. I remember one homeless person giving up a flat as he couldn't cope with the bed and comforts which is something I still find hard to understand. However, many issues in life which are alien to many are hard or impossible for others to understand.

Of course so many homeless have other underlying issues as well. They al need tackling. So many issues and not enough people, money, resources generally to do sufficient.
