  • Should I contact my debtors or is this an awful idea?

    Hi all,

I would really appreciate advice on dealing with debts.

I owe £2000 to santander bank. The debt was 4 years 6 months ago. It was at an old address and I have no access to these letters [royal mail will not allow me to forward the mail as it is from a long time ago, and is over 300 miles away].

I am worried that I am getting letters at the old address regarding the above debt. However I am not sure if I should reach out to Santander with my updated address. I am worried that this resets the 6 year period so I am back to square one. The debt is almost 18 months away from being statute barred so not sure if I should just leave it.

However if I just leave it I may end up with a CCJ!!

Is there a way to contact them with my updated address [to show I did try and get in touch] but not contact them in a way that resets the 6 year period?

    Any advice appreciated!!

Simply updating your address does not re-set the SB clock, only a payment or a written admission of the debt does that.

Updating your address should ensure you do not get a CCJ without prior knowledge.

That said, you might be putting yourself on their radar.

It never did for me (three accounts) but that was not Santander. They probably get dozens/hundreds change of address letters every day. The people who deal with them are unlikely to know the state of your account.

Your debt is coming upto the age when 'last ditch' action is likely (usually in the last year). Better to know about it so you can deal with it than getting a CCJ.
