  • NatWest Overdraft

    Hello,

I have an old overdraft with NatWest with a balance of £2874.

This shows on my credit files as a closed/defaulted account, with the above balance, and a default date of 30th May 2013.

I want to apply for a mortgage in the next 12-18 months so I would like to get this debt cleared or removed from my files.

I updated NatWest with my new address when I moved in March/April 2013, but have never had any written correspondence from them, or telephone calls, regarding this account and repayments.

Do I wait for this account to become Statute Barred and "drop off" in May 2019, or, should I contact them and either dispute the removal of the default and the account due to no contact from them, or make an offer of a settlement payment?

Do I run the risk of a CCJ being requested, even at such a late stage (only 1 year to go until it reaches the 6 year mark).

No other accounts show on my files so it has not been passed to a collection agency and is still sitting with NatWest.

I am worried that contacting them may constitute as acknowledgement of the debt and start the 6 year clock over again.

I've read that overdrafts are a bit tricky when it comes to them being Statute Barred, but mine clearly shows as being defaulted in May 2013.

    Many thanks.

If it were me then I would keep quite and hope it just goes Stat Barred.

Contacting them risks alerting them to the fact they have done nothing and might make them realise time is running out.

Even if you settle it will still show on your credit file as a settled default.
