  • Cheques, charges and loans... a mess!

    Hi all

I haven't been here since my first lot of charges were refunded last year, now it's a mess and I do not know what to do...

I wrote cheques which I called in advance to cancel, the advice from NW was because they were guaranteed with a card, they would still go through so no point. So I didn't.

I would just have to either put up with them being taken and me being charged, or them being rejected and me being charged apparently.

16/10 3 cheques rejected as upaid (funds did not cover) 16/10 charges -£114.00
17/10 1 cheque paid out amt £100 - this one took me over the o/draft

none of these cheques were requested a 2nd time, that comes later..

then I was paid and money went into account... so all fine for a while.

10/11 charge -referral for October -£60

the above covered payments for £1.81, £1.99, and a cheque for £150 that were all paid.

14/11 Guarantee card payment fee 'A' (chq) -£35
    14/11 Unpaid items (d/d) -£35
    14/11 Unpaid items (d/d) -£38
14/11 paid chq 'A' see above funds
    17/11 Unpaid items chq 'B' and d/d -£76
18/11 Gtee card pmt fee chq 'C' -£35
18/11 paid chq 'C' despite even less funds than before ...

19/11 Gtee card pmt fee chq 'D' -£35
    19/11 paid chq 'D'
    20/11 Gee card pmt fee chq 'B' & 'E' -£70
    20/11 paid chq 'B' & 'E'

    1/12 unpaid d/d -£38
    2/12 unpaid s/o of £5.52 - £38

on 21st Nov I was paid my salary which was swallowed. So I rang about the advice given re not cancelling the cheques, fair enough if they would have gone out anyway.

I was offered an 'internal' personal loan. I have since sent 2 docs back which I didn't sign correctly (I am also being made to sign for personal protection at about £16 a month for them to even consider this). I went to branch last wed as the docs they said they sent out again had not arrived. I then phoned Friday ("it takes 48 hours for internal post, ring back" ), Monday ( " call tomorrow, if still not received we can give you email address of person dealing ..." ) and today (" ring branch, nothing here ") she gave me the wrong phone number, rang back and that was the only no. girl had. Rang std tel and was given the 'branch' no which was a central answering service. Told to do this in branch, again.

All this, and they will probably be declined anyway!

I'm at a loss as to why they would charge me a fee for a cheque being returned, then accept and honour cheque second time around when an account is even more over the o/draf than it was last time...

I'm at a loss, I'd like to go on with the loan thing as I can't even afford to pay my childminder, can anyone suggest anything and where to go from here as I'm just at a loss and dumfounded.

Please, I know this is my fault in the first place but things have perhaps taken place that I think are a bit unethical, any good advice would be hugely appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance guys

    Hello Nuddy,
Nice to hear form you, even if it is cause you are in a bit of a pickle.
For one, they can not force you into having PPI for a loan, that is blatent mis selling and you should report them.
I personally don't think taking a loan even if they will give it to you is going to help you in the long run, but that is only my opinion.
As for the charges I know all has changed on that front and I am not the one who can answer your questions.
Someone will be along to help you nuddy, maybe too if this is going to continue and snowball you may be better off with a basic account. Enaid x

Nuddy re the PLP as they call it. Ask them that you want the loan without PLP as the bank are scrapping it anyway.
      ------------------------------- merged -------------------------------
The bank can only process one cheque that is guaranteed PER DAY as laid out in the cheque guarantee scheme. They cannot stop the cheque that is guaranteed if it is the only one that day

Apologies I am making a mess of the old advice stuff, nuddy. Referral charges relate to something being paid when you were over the overdraft limit so 2 items or 2 entries..

I think it may be worth opening a basic bank account elsewhere so that you can start to get yourself sorted out. As Enaid says, a loan may not be the best answer, although that is only my opinion (having been there, done that, got the teeshirt).

Natwest have also got another "scheme" for want of a better word, where if you are attracting loads of charges, you can pay a management fee of £10 pr month, which then lowers the charges (I think its 17 instead of 38 for a bounced cheque, or something like that) This can be sorted by your branch. In fact I'm surprised you haven't been offered it already - I've only had about 5 charges over the last few months and I got a letter last week offering it to me.

Also, you will probably find that when your cheque book runs out they will not send you another one.. This happened to us, and although it was a pain in the butt I was grateful in the long run, because it stopped me spending money I hadn't got then incurring even more charges. And now that most places have stopped taking cheques anyway, it stopped me from going into Asda 3 days before payday and stocking up with food I didn't need.

Have you dne an income and expenditure sheet? That will help you get things into perspective, and might pinpoint places where you can cut back on things.

Re: Cheques, charges and loans... a mess!

Thanks guys, I'm just really scared that it's christmas. My salary is due to be paid into the account and swallowed up, and to be honest I'm just in a massive hole, again, and not sure anyone else will have me as my credit is absolutely awful. Why o why do I do it!

Hi Enaid and Wendy again - sorry I didn't say hello properly, I'm in a mess as you can see! Hope you are all well and good

Best thing in that case is to try and get a bog standard basic account sorted out sharpish. I'm not too up on those but sure someone will know whats what. Or even a building society account - some of those will take BACS payments in, although you can't have d/ds. And cancel every non-essential d/d that you can. Or all of them, and pay them over the counter at the post office instead.

And rip up your cheque book lol.

Re: Cheques, charges and loans... a mess!

If your paydate is to close to have it paid into a different bank account I would approach your companies payroll and ask if its possible to be paid by cheque for this month. There are plenty of places that offer cheque cashing facilities (They do charge for this service - I paid just under £50 on a £735 cheque recently). I know cashing fee is a pain but it will mean its not swallowed up by the bank

                    Hiya Nuddy,

Don't stress, all this will get sorted eventually. Most of here have been there and done that so to speak.
Anyways to to say that I have got the Nationwide Flex Account, its great, you can have your wages paid in there, pay your bills online and the bonus is they are not bothered about your credit rating.

Just pop in there with 2 forms of i.d. and bingo you are sorted.

Oh and if you fancy filling in your income and expenditure form, pop it over to me and I'll take a look and see if we can get a few things sorted and see if we can cut a few corners to help you along.

Okay, so the branch filled out more forms yesterday and sent the p/work over by fax, and it was agreed this morning whoopee! Do not like having a loan, have not had one for so long, but this at the moment was the only way.

I will now write to them and complain about a number of things, one is why one call centre can provide such varying and inaccurate information, plus why I have basically been forced to accept ppi!

Thanks for your help on this, WendyB I'm sending over my budget sheet - wish I'd done this before!!!
