  • Sorry! Another Lowell Portfolio question.

    Hello there,

My husband has just received a letter from the above stating that they are trying to contact him in relation to information supplied by a credit reference agency.

Firstly, the surname is spelled incorrectly but only by a digit. The letter refers to a person who lived at an address that actually my father in law lived in. We arranged the accommodation, paid all the bills as he could not have provided a reference himself.

The accommodation was a warden controlled complex, we moved him to a care home due to dementia some two years ago.
My husband had several missed phone calls on his mobile, quite possibly over a year ago. On one occasion he answered the phone call and a lady wanted to know his name and address.

He didn't give it to her but asked what it was regarding. It was a BT account. We did have a BT phone account for my father in law and in fact, had the same account for two of the flats he lived in but naturally did not need it in a care home.

We cancelled and paid everything when ending all services and do not remember there ever being an issue with BT.

We heard nothing more until now, a letter from Lowell. If for some reason this is the same concern regarding BT, we genuinely have no recollection of any outstanding money owed but, if we did, and overlooked it by mistake, BT has never once got in touch.

If BT had sent letters to us at my father in laws previous address, then. the staff who have always had our address surely would have passed them on.

I think what is strange though, we paid BT straight from our bank account and any paper correspondence always had my husband's name correctly written.

If we owe money, then we are more than happy to pay, but it all seems a little odd.

Any thought would be greatly appreciated, my husband thought that the previous calls were a scam but who knows.

    Many thanks indeed.

            Hello Fairfields

You're understandably in the dark about this ancient debt so it's up to Lowells to enlighten you.

@Debt Camel has a very good 'Prove IT!' letter on her website so I would send that to stop them in their tracks before this escalates to a court claim.

              Hello,

Many thanks. The letter actually has not spelt my husbands name correctly, only by one letter. In the first instance, should my husband telephone BT? Or should we reply to the letter with your recommendation of making them do all the work?

              Thank you.

                Hi there

youre certainly entitled to question Lowells on this, from what you say it seems that the account was paid up and in those circumstances you are entitled to ask Lowells to provide a clear breakdown as to how the debt accrued.

Are you certain that its about the BT account? and have you checked the previous address to check if the staff had any documents through the post that werent sent on?

I don't think a typo will make any difference at this stage. You've received a letter not a court claim where accuracy is essential.

By all means start your research with BT but at the same time send a letter to Lowells to prevent court action.

In all fairness to them (and I don't often say that!) if you don't tell them you're not accepting what they say (and asking them to prove it) how will they ever know?

Re: Sorry! Another Lowell Portfolio question.

Ok, thank you. We shall contact BT, contact the previous address and also send the letter to Lowells. The letter, that they sent us though, just asks my husband to confirm that it is him!

As I previously said you could do both because there's no certainty at this point that Lowells are chasing an old BT account.

Or more importantly there's no certainty that it is even your husband they are chasing when it could be a person with a similar/misspelt name and while tracing that person they came up with your husband through a CRA (as stated in your first post).

Ask Lowells to prove it, but don't tell them anything (i.e. don't mention BT). Make them do the work!

                        Dear everyone,
Many thanks for your advice. We did question Lowells and it was about an old BT bill. I think that at the time, we thought that we had dealt with it. Anyway, we did owe the money so we paid it immediately. It appears that the sheltered housing did not forward the reminders.
Many thanks again, as what is fair is fair!!
