  • Possible passport fraud

I needed my newborn son's passport countersigned, so I asked an old colleague of mine, who used to be a solicitor. He had already signed 3 adult and 2 child passports for his other friends so I thought nothing of it.

    Passport arrived, no issues.

Got a phone call from him inviting me out to a meal to celebrate his new job, during course of said meal, it emerged he isn't a solicitor as he never completed the course, only the degree, and thus shouldn't have written solicitor on the form. He's now working in a car dealership.

Booked a holiday for Sept. What are the chances of me being stopped at the airport due to this? And if so, will I be arrested?

I dont want to get him in any trouble for this as I think it was a genuiine misunderstanding as he does have a degree so he does have professional qualification. But I am worried, incase they decide to check the passport.

What shall I do, is it worth phoning passport office and cancelling the passport and then reapplying?

I do not think you are in trouble. You believed and were entitled to believe the person who signed as a solicitor, was, in fact, a solicitor.

The person who held himself out to be a solicitor may very well be in trouble.

As for applying for a new passport, if you choose to do so, you would be well advised to be truthful about why you are doing so. "The dog ate the passport", will not do.

Any check they would be doing should have been done before issuing the passport, I would say that unless they write to you to cancel the passport you will be fine.
