  • Non profit support group - Can I take donations?

    Hi guys,

I've recently setup a non profit support group as unfortunately 4 friends have killed themsleves in the past 2 years.

I decided enough was enough and I had to stand up and stop this stigma of people being scared to speak about mental health and depression.

Our live chat goes live on the 1st of July (Sunday coming up) and we're down to earth people that can sit and have a chat and try to point you in the right direction if you need advice.

I've spent a fair bit on things such as hosting, artwork, banners, flyers, t-shirts, a camera for events and much more.

Am I able to take donations (Or sell stuff such as t-shirts) as I'm advertising as a "non profit" support group? I'd just like to cover some costs and to have further funds that I could spend on advertising and raising awareness and things.

I'm also looking at hosting events maybe doing a raffle and such to raise funds for the group, I'm not wanting to make any money from the group however I'd like to make money FOR the group.

At what point do I need to register as a charity also? My first time doing anything like this so I'm lost and though I'd try ask you guys.

Thanks in advanced for your replies!
