  • Cackhanders

Am currently watching Esther Rantzen and some other woman on BBC news about left handed people, and this has come up before on another forum that I frequent. So I am interested to know if there are any others of us that are left handed on here?

I am, it has gone through the generations in my family, I know that my maternal grandfather is, my mum's brother was, and I am. Don't know of any others in the family though.

My teachers did try to force me to write with my right hand, but my mum gave them a blasting and that soon stopped, by the time I got to secondary school, that had stopped and they left to me write how I wanted.

But being brought up in a right handed world I have learned to do most things right handed, I cannot knit or crochet. And being left handed got me out of being trained for the sign writer job at B&Q (can't do it cos of the ink/paint getting smudged)

I am not one of those left handed people that has my hand in a strange disjointed position while writing though.

So am I alone or are there more uf us? :slayer:

        Hiya......

Gotta join in here, I was born right handed and I am now a leftie. I had to adapt because of stroke damage to my right side. But lately I have noticed that I am using my right more often. So I guess I am pretty odd.

        Best wishes,
        Hod...Liam..

Well I'm left handed and never considered myself to be particularly entrepreneurial.

mind you i have been working hard developing a company i work for over the past 9 years from 6 staff in one office to 26 now with four offices.

We are just reorganising to take action to deal with the changes in management required and our five year plan will take us to 150 - 200 employees and 8 offices world wide.

We may not reach that target of course but it does make me feel a little bit like Richard Branson, although i don't wear the stupid jumpers he does.

Re the left handedness, there are some things i can do with both hands, so it doesn't matter which side of the bed i sleep on.

I write with my left hand and most other things that only require the use of one hand.

When it comes to things where two hands are required, cricket, golf, shooting, then i am right handed. Always thought it was because that's how i was taught but my father got me some lessons with a left handed club and i couldn't hit the ball at all let alone be competitive.

            Weird

I was a natural left hander, but years ago when I was a mere child it was considered wrong so my mother and my teachers made me learn to write with my right hand. A few years ago I had an accident to my right hand and found that after all that time I automatically reverted back to using my left hand.
I do most things both right and left handed and it annoys 'the old git' totally. Weird eh !

Im left handed too! :banana:I was never forced to try and write right handed though! I must be a little younger than u lot lol!

I buy lots of things from my local left hand shop! ie sissors, can openers, and it really annoys my o/h when he cant find the right handed ones.

In the office i cannot use the main pc as the bloody mouse has to be up side down and it drives me mad! so my faithful lappy goes everywhere with me!

as for sports well im left handed in tennis, squash and (swimming ) but surprisingly im right handed at golf ...

And i always have to have an automatic car abroad! unless im in anguilla, cayman, or montserrat

                    Southpaws

I married a southpaw and read up on the subject once, as I was trying to find answers to the questions why we never did anything the same way, or agreed on most things.

It seems that the gene is passed through females. Everyone has about 10% chance of being left handed. This increases to c20% if mother is LH. Father doesn't influence, though if both parents are LH then the chances of the kids being LH leaps to about 40%.

There are also issues of legged-ness and visual acuity giving an eyed-ness, but few people realise that these factors extend beyond hands.

A family famous for this is the Keir family from Scotland, and they have a saying in Scotland keir-handed. Their castle was apparently the only one where the newels (spiral stairs) go up clockwise. Normally they go up anticlockwise, so that the defenders upstairs have the reach advantage with swords in right hands, where attackers are obstructed by the central pillar.

In Latin, right is dextra (dextrous, agile), while left is sinistra (sinister). Left handedness was seen as the work of the devil or something way back.

The book I read was a brilliant study, with a thorough analysis of lots of scientific and empirical evidence. I asked the wife to read it as I thought she'd enjoy knowing more about it. She declined on the grounds that the author wasn't left-handed, so wasn't qualified to speak on the subject.

I rested my case and the jury is still out.....

My brother is a leftie and he has knitted left-handed, not that he admits to it now lol
when my daughter was a baby it looked like she was going to be a leftie like her dad, sorry kafka ( i am a rightie) so i started making her take things with her right, and taught her to eat right handed. However shortly after starting school i discovered she ate left handed when not under my watchful eye (sneaky minx) and still does but she's right handed for everything else.
Moral is, people will always revert to the side they were born with
