• advice needed please primark incident.

Hi
I would appreciate some advice please on an incident that happened earlier this week.
On Wednesday morning I was shopping in this shop and took several things into the changing room to try on along with my shopping bags. I was rushing and had 10 minutes before needing to get back to car so hastily tried on all items. I decided to take all items but wanted to see a cardigan on in full length better lit mirror outside in store away from changing rooms. I left cardigan on and in my haste I left changing rooms with bags other items but stupidly put my coat on without thinking. On leaving the changing rooms I told the lady I wanted to take everything and she said well I need to count the items in your hand, of which she did. Only then did I realise what had happened as i saw 3 hangers with nothing on. I explained that I had cardigan on and wanted to see it in full light outside of changing rooms. She asked about other hangers and I didn't know so I said the items must be in changing cubicle. We both returned to said changing cubicle where I walked in took coat off cardigan off and handed back to her. In that moment I then saw two garments on shelf of cubicle and in blind panic I put them with my shopping bags (moments later I realised they were concealed) She didn't see this. She did not come in to cubicle. She then frog marched me out into a side area archway in changing rooms by desk, probably (but not entirely sure?) Away from any cameras as I think there was one on the main exit/entrance to rooms. whilst she shouted to her colleague to alert security she pushed me into this area as I tried to talk to the colleague. I then saw that as I put my bags down on floor which were open the two remaining garments were in there so I took them out and placed on floor next to where I was standing. After this all happened security arrived and I explained my silly actions about the coat and my reasons. He said I looked genuine. The manager turned up and said we have cctv and will look at it. I now realise then that I should have told them that the other two garments had gone in my bag but didnt. He simply asked for my name and phone number. Nothing else. The manager said I could go but as company policy states she will be taking matters further. I left my details and left the shop.
I feel sick and have not slept or eaten. I am devastated at how guilty I look and did apologise for how it seemed. I am a professional person and my job relies on no criminal record. I have not shoplifted I have not left store. The cctv could have caught me in that separate section of the changing room taking garments out of my bag. I was never asked: to leave shopping bags out of cubicle when entering, security did not ask to see my bags, they do not have any information but my name and home number which was real although I could have told them anything.
What is likely to happen? I need to prepare myself. I have told my husband and he is standing by me as he knows I am a bit thoughtless and air headed at times! I just want to know if further action will be taken. It is causing me great stress.
Kind regards and look forward to some advice and support please.

You are going to be asked to pay a speculative invoice from a company called Retail Loss prevention

As no criminal charges were given or police called you can ignore Retail Loss

Is that it? Even if the cctv could seem to incriminate me? How will this company contact me if I left no address?
Thanks for speedy reply. Appreciated.

although if the OP only gave them her name and home (tel?) number (then Rlp won't be able to send her any letters
Can you confirm what details they were given pinkunicorn ??

If you gave them no home address ID then i cannot see how they can contact you

Just be on your guard anyone who phones asking for personal details

Just say you do not give details over the phone and put everything in writing

Then hang up

no police were called, therefore no criminal record.
no address was given, therefore no letters can be sent.

They might try phoning you to ask for extra info, but I'd say that you can safely ignore. Call it a lesson learned  xx

Just out of interest a) for data protection is my name and number allowed to be passed on without my permission? B) can my address be sought out from my phone number? Or can only police do that? And no police were involved.

My air head lesson has been learnt.

As no police were involved just ignore everything now and get on with your life

If you get any escalating threatening letters just give us a bell as it is nothing more than custom and practice seeing these guys off since that court case in Oxford

Re: advice needed please primark incident.

Don't want to cause alarm, but if they have name and BT phone number it s not difficult to obtain the address, either by reverse searching or via electoral roll.

I think you should be ready for a begging letter from Retail Loss Prevention, which, as already explained, should be ignored.

Primark lost nothing, and so are due nothing.
You were not shoplifting, but were possibly panicked by the assistant's attitude
If you were actually manhandled you may be able to make a complaint of assault (altho' not worth the effort!)

Hello Pinkunicorn...
I read your intro post, and in a later post read that the shop was Primark.... correct?

1. I believe that the sales assistant made a bad mistake, because most Primarks will only allow 2 or possibly 3 items to be taken into a changing room at one time. This is important customer-care, because where a person takes in more items than this, confusion can often occur.

2. It is quite common for customers to make mistakes....... we are all human. You would be surprised at how often customers carry items out of shops in their hands and simply forget to pay. And many customers use their own bags to collect shop selections, taking all to the tills and emptying all out there. Customers can also try on some clothing items and simply forget that they are wearing them as they look at the next garment (or whatever). etc etc etc

3. An important part of customer service is the application of customer-care! Staff that see that a customer has become disorganized etc have a duty of care to offer assistance and help. In your incident this did not happen! Very bad!

4. Now...... Did anybody ban you from ever shopping there again? If not, then you are most unlikely to be pursued in connection with this incident. It's a really silly policy for shops to treat mistaken customers and even negligent customers as bad folks, and the idea of a shop telling such a customer that in future they will have to spend all their money across the road at the competitor shop is a totally daft mindset, although some shops haven't figured this out yet!

I don't think that this will go further, but if you get any mail or calls in connection with your unhappy trip into this shop, just come back here and tell the bosses.
