, i really do hope that all proceeds of crime are filtered back to the poor people who have lost there life savings, although this link is not ebay/gumtree fraud car scam related it is to show that in time the gang stealing millions from people looking to for a vehicle will get justice in the end, i predidct that the victims will go from 3500 now to 5000 victims before 2015!!, i hope i am wrong but at the moment its a torrent

If the Government's own websites are riddled with fraudulent listings it's difficult to accept that they are capable of doing anything about the conduct of Ebay etc.

I specialise in spotting and highlighting the scams and scammers on just one ad site as I don't have time to do more, even though I have a lot of spare time, but the one thing that's become apparent to me is that the scammers have overwhelmed the site I observe to an extent that, in my opinion, it isn't safe for the average buyer to use.

The site does remove a lot of the scams after a delay though many remain in place for up to a day sometimes. Considering that most nights around 100 scams are posted, though at weekends that can rise to nearer 200, using the site's own search function to find the best value deal will lead a buyer straight to a scam. My analogy is that a minefield doesn't cover every inch of ground with mines, but there are so many, it's not worth the risk. Indeed, even though I can spot most scams I wouldn't waste my time sifting through the scams.

It's a matter of the general public becoming aware of just how risky these sites are and the car dealers and sellers realising that they're wasting their money advertising on them. There isn't any convenience to using an ad site if it's actually a gamble as to whether or not you lose all your money.

By the by - today I happened to phone my electricity supplier to give them my meter reading as they hadn't been able to read it themselves recently.

I pay by bills I receive through the mail and don't have any online system set up with them, and yet merely by asking my date of birth they were able to identify me, which rather surprised and shocked me. I got through to a real person and asked how they were able to do that and he said that this appeared on my records as part of the original credit verifying process they perform.

The concern is that not so long ago people were able to set up payday loans based merely on knowing a person's date of birth and the company actually believed in some way that just by knowing this information the person whose identity had been stolen was bound to pay. There has also been a recent case where a bank took the same view.

She explained that somebody had appropriated my name, address and date of birth, along with a company directorship I hold. Not difficult. They’re all a matter of public record. But that still shouldn’t be enough to open a bank account.

If that happened to me and a bank charged my account without proper authority I wouldn't blame the fraudster because knowing my date of birth doesn't convey authority of any sort to anyone.

We may worry that sensitive financial data about us is being accessed too easily, but when it appears that your date of birth is being treated as some form of crucial identity establishing information, not only is our money laundering process worthless but the whole viability of our financial system is at risk when organisations are being so lax.

The point is that bank account opening has become so lax that fraud via accounts opened solely to perpetrate fraud has increased to a massive extent. If a person can get a personal account opened fraudulently then getting a business account is simple and the potential earnings from crime become so much greater.

I'm still uncertain about the supposed letter from my electricity supplier, but a simple local mailshot using 'spoofed' letters on a simple pc could easily snag many tens of thousands of pounds. The problem is that if you operate a payments system with easily exploitable defects, it imposes rigorous procedures on those who use it, even legitimate companies. The fact that the only identifying information I provided was my date of birth, not even a customer number, made me very suspicious and they didn't quote my name and address but immediately asked me to pay by phone, which I was never going to do. I asked them to send me a bill which I would pay through the bank using the details I had always used.

The fundamental problem is that if you cannot identify or be certain of the identity of any party you're paying money to, and the banks protect the identity of those accounts, then the banking system has designed a payment system perfect for use by criminals and fraudsters.

The problem is that there is an almost universal promotion of online trading and payment with very little warning of the risks.

hi we got in touch with the ceo of Barclays bank his email address is antony.Jenkins@Barclays.com we sent him a full email of what had happened to us on sun 19/01/14. To are amazement we received a reply back by dinner time he is looking into the matter of what had happened and how Barclays fraud department had let us down he said he would be in touch by the end of the week we emailed him back thanking him and was looking forward to his reply will let you all know the outcome.

Hi ive also been scammed for 9220.00 into a barklays account for a bessacarr e745 by a person called geert stones thankyou for link to barklays head man have sent email as well seems its mostley barklays that the fraudsters mamage to open accounts with ??i think they must not do proper checkes on people opening bank accounts as surley the police would be able to aprehend them if their id was true hopefully il hear back from barklays to thanks again for address diane

hi, have you been in touch with your MP we have and hes looking into things for us we have also contacted watchdog . did you report this to action fraud aswell we did. please keep in touch and let us know how you get on

I think that this whole forum should be sent to watch dog to see if they can get answers as alot of people have lost a lot of money (mine was my retirement lumpsum ) diame

I need Sort Code and Account number of the account you paid money to.
Their name and email address, copies of any emails (forwarded in full please) and any emails sent with an "invoice", again forwarded in full please.

A link to the listing Autotrader/eBay etc and the seller name.

Also walesman, it only had 6 minutes airtime on the One Show and 12 minutes on BBC South Easts Inside Out programme, neither show put across in detail what we wanted them to, I was extremely disappointed to say the least.

OK, a new( new to me anyway) MO was used to scam member diame, this time the motorhome was listed for sale in a local newspaper.

She rang the telephone number which went to an automated service where she left contact details.

The scammer then contacted diame and asked her to email geertstones@aol.com who sent pictures/details of the motorhome. The motorhome and seller claimed to be in Germany.

An fake invoice and fake online chat session was used by the supposed shipping company trager-de.com . Account rep name of jacek piotr czernik.

Supposed delay at customs and request of another £1020 to release which was paid.

As imagined, motorhome due to be delivered 24/2/14 never appeared, website/phone/email no longer available. Reported to Police and RBS (victims bank) and Barclays.

Unusually this time Barclays confirmed the account had been suspended and offered £1020 as a "goodwill gesture" and wipe their hands of responsibility, diame refused and contacted CAB who told her to again contact the bank and if no joy will be happy to contact FOS.

I have advised diame to accept the £1020 refund as part settlement and inform them she will be seeking the remainder through the authorities. Needless to say I have informed diame she may well never see the original sale amount of £8200 again.
