Re: Anti-Fracking Protesters Cleared By Police

Sussex Police has come in for a lot of criticism over the years, as well as being exposed as being involved in some very questionable actions. In one case, a superintendent was found to be providing the security manager of a private-sector arms company with information on protesters who were protesting outside the company's factory. The information was coming from the PNC and police records. Totally illegal. It is the same force that arrested a woman defending herself against two Rossendales bailiffs who had illegally forced their way into her home and whom the most senior criminal circuit judge in South East England slammed as having no grounds for arrest. Operation Countryman looked into allegations of corruption in the Metropolitan Police. Is it not time to turn the focus on provincial police forces, including Sussex Police?

With regard to the police officer's behaviour, highlighted by Enquirer, in Post #2, there is, unfortunately, a small minority of officers who resort to these unauthorised methods. They are a menace to the public as well as the majority of decent and honest police officers.

Don't rule out the likelihood that professional agitators were at work.

The most likely offence the protesters committed by blocking the road is Obstructing the Free Passage Along the Public Highway, contrary to the Highways Act.

I have come across concerns being expressed by serving police officers as to what they are being asked to do and many of them are very uncomfortable about it. They are, after all, ordinary men and woman, many with families, who risk their lives for 8-12 hours a day. They are uncomfortable about being asked to protect the interests of commercial concerns and I have heard of dissent being voiced by members of the judiciary that the courts system should not be used to protect or further commercial interests.

Both these things are probably true.

It certainly likely that the usual troublemakers and layabouts were there, but there is another possibility - agents provocateurs. These have been used by big business in the past to discredit legitimate protests.

Recent revelations about the use of private security companies should give pause for thought.

You've hit the nail on the head, Enquirer. It does make one wonder why the Security Industry Authority (SIA) is a seemingly weak regulator. Whether it is deliberate is a matter of debate, but a regulator is needed who can come down hard on private security companies and individuals within the private security industry.

Don't tar them all with the same brush. The number of rogue officers accounts for a very small minority - around 5% - of the total number of police officers currently serving. They are a menace to the public and other police officers. Rooting them out and booting them out of the police service is something that needs to be done as a matter of priority.

Heard the Police got rid of them by telling them their doe money will be stopped and the import of drugs stopped. Tell them to frack off, as they always do in the end.
