We have all had that heart in mouth OH MY GOD what have I done with my phone moment.
Here is a quick at a glance guide to what to do
Firstly, don't panic.
I know it seems harsh, but it's going to be ok, it is a very easy solved problem and the customer services agents you deal with have heard every concievable reason for losing a phone. Don't worry.
Think, where was the last place you think you could have lost it.
If you are 100% certain you were at home/work all you need is to bar the phone, if you think it could have been in the street, contact the police and report it, who knows, a good samaritan (yes they are still out there) could pick your phone up and hand it in.
Just an aside, but yesterday I actually got a call from a lady who had found a Samsung Galaxy sIII in Bluewater Shopping Centre and wondered if I could call the owner for her as the handset was barred.
Call your provider as soon as you realise that the phone is missing, tell them what is happening and ask them to place an IMEI Bar on the account. Don't worry you can call them and have it removed, its fine.
The IMEI bar will stop all calls from the SIM and the phone, the phone is now worthless to anyone.
If you are unsure of where you lost the phone, ask for a new SIM card, this can be posted to you and normally the timescale is 48 WORKING hours.
So, you are the lucky person, and you have had you phone rerturned/found.. now what do you do.
Phone your company and ask for the bar to be lifted. That simple. You will be asked if you are using the original SIM card, if you are it is a 24 working hours timescale to have a nice working handset, if you have a new SIM card, simply give them the number of the SIM card and they will register it to your phone, again this can take up to 24 working hours.
Just something to make you smile a little, I was once asked to bar a lost phone and I said, have you any idea where you lost the handset? In the street or at home somewhere?
The gentleman giggled slightly and answered "I took the kids to Whispnade Safari park, I know we shouldn't have but we gave the baboons some bread and butter, and one took my phone and ran off with it over his head like Man U winning the cup!!"
See we have heard EVERYTHING!!
