  • Lost/stolen phone? what to do.

We have all had that heart in mouth OH MY GOD what have I done with my phone moment.

Here is a quick at a glance guide to what to do

    Firstly, don't panic.
I know it seems harsh, but it's going to be ok, it is a very easy solved problem and the customer services agents you deal with have heard every concievable reason for losing a phone. Don't worry.

Think, where was the last place you think you could have lost it.
If you are 100% certain you were at home/work all you need is to bar the phone, if you think it could have been in the street, contact the police and report it, who knows, a good samaritan (yes they are still out there) could pick your phone up and hand it in.

Just an aside, but yesterday I actually got a call from a lady who had found a Samsung Galaxy sIII in Bluewater Shopping Centre and wondered if I could call the owner for her as the handset was barred.

Call your provider as soon as you realise that the phone is missing, tell them what is happening and ask them to place an IMEI Bar on the account. Don't worry you can call them and have it removed, its fine.

The IMEI bar will stop all calls from the SIM and the phone, the phone is now worthless to anyone.

If you are unsure of where you lost the phone, ask for a new SIM card, this can be posted to you and normally the timescale is 48 WORKING hours.

So, you are the lucky person, and you have had you phone rerturned/found.. now what do you do.

Phone your company and ask for the bar to be lifted. That simple. You will be asked if you are using the original SIM card, if you are it is a 24 working hours timescale to have a nice working handset, if you have a new SIM card, simply give them the number of the SIM card and they will register it to your phone, again this can take up to 24 working hours.

Just something to make you smile a little, I was once asked to bar a lost phone and I said, have you any idea where you lost the handset? In the street or at home somewhere?

The gentleman giggled slightly and answered "I took the kids to Whispnade Safari park, I know we shouldn't have but we gave the baboons some bread and butter, and one took my phone and ran off with it over his head like Man U winning the cup!!"

    See we have heard EVERYTHING!!

One might suppose the first step would be to use one's land-line to call the missing mobile; if it's in one's house, one should thus be able to find it.

Puff, what do you think about the apps for locating phones using their inbuilt navigation? I know of three people now where police have successfully found thieves because of these.

they work well Labby but the first thing a lot of crooks do is switch the phone off and discard the SIM, so the phone is vertiually untrackable.

I am assuming you have done the "Ring my phone I can't find it" thing Cloggy.

having said that, I can clearly remember a call a workmate took where the person demanded a manager, as she wouldn't bar his lost SIM card... for the handset he was using to call her at the precise time... a LOST SIM card.....

My mobile phone number is the first speedial number on my landline or I'd never find the bloody thing,,doesn't help that my brat insists on changing my ringtone periodically to the latest filthy song.At the moment my text alert is a dog barking which sends the cats into a frenzy!!

For those smartphones using Android there is an app available with the AVG anti virus app that will locate your phone. I've used it with my tablet and it appears to work exceedingly well. In my case it locates the tablet (and shows it on the maps) AND gives you the option to sound an alarm on the tablet, lock the tablet and wipe the tablet clean.

Literally, yes; in terms of the theory, definitely not.

you need to call up your service provider and cancel your contract, so that if it HAS been stolen it doesn't get used, alternatively wait a little white and see if it turns up!

and maybe if you haven't already, get phone insurance for your next phone.. although they don't all cover loss, i'm pretty sure they cover it if it's been stolen!

                      hope this helps

Or don't buy a fancy 'phone but get something inexpensive that will cope with voice and text messages.

Run it on a PAYG tariff.

If it has actually been stolen as opposed to just misplaced, then you should also report it to the police and get a crime number.
