Hello
I moved into a rented flat about 2 years ago, which was exclusive of bills. It is a terraced house that has been converted into 2 flats. Upon moving in I asked the letting agency about the whereabouts of the electric meter as it was nowhere in the house. They didn’t help at all and told me to keep looking.
When I moved in I switched providers right away and told them (e on) that I can’t give an initial reading for electric as I don’t know where the meter is. They said it’s fine and just estimated the first reading.
a few months later I found out that the meter is in my neighbour’s house. So I tried to put a reading in, but the app wasn’t accepting it because it was very high compared to the estimated amount. After many calls and emails with e on they eventually put in the actual reading and now they issued me a statement saying that my balance is about £6000!!
obviously that’s an oblivious amount and it’s all a misunderstanding because the initial reading was way way below what the actual reading was supposed to be. They told me someone will call me a few weeks to discuss the debt.
what is my position on this though? Are they likely to actually ask me to pay this much? It’s just a one bedroom flat with 2 people living in it. Is the letting agency liable in any way because they didn’t provide info/access to the meter?
thank you
