    Re: External Hard Drives

Just some notes as I go along so I don't forget next time I do this.

    1/ Clean out junk/rubbish files:

    - CCleaner

    Download CCleaner ( Download CCleaner 2.09.600 - FileHippo.com )
Install it and run it, there's a nice How to here: CCleaner - 1. After Installation

Had to make sure I scrolled down and read it properly, got a bit confusing but got there.

You basically want to start at the top and run the Cleaner with everything selected, clean the registry ( do this option multiple times until it comes back clean) and then we need to look at the programs that start when the computer is booted.

First time it came up with 968 problems so I clicked Next and it asked if I wanted to fix errors, so I said yes that led me to a screen to BUY the programme, so scanned again and clicked no and its cleaned 8 programmes so have to scan again and again but hey if it saves money and speeds up the pooter I'm happy, but have to state that I'm lucky as have more than one pooter to come on here with, don't think I'd be that happy if I had to sit and wait for one pooter to be done. But so far so good.

Ok confession time I selected the wrong programme and have been running RegCure, I was wondering what I was doing wrong. Anyway have now got CCleaner running, although I have deselected the Cookies option as I don't want to lose a couple of things and can't remember the passwords. Hope thats right at last.

In the Tools tab select start up. Now make the box FULL screen and take a screen shot.
For Screen Shot press the ALT and Prnt Screen buttons, then open word (or any other imaging program) RIGHT click and select PASTE. You now have a picture of the CCleaner window in a word doc. Attach that here and we'll advise what you can disable and what you MUST keep on start up.

      Re: External Hard Drives

Ok having spent the last 5 hours clicking on the clean button, on bottom right hand side, I have at last worked out that all i had to do was click on analyise and then the bottom right hand buttom.
Have done the registry thingy and saved it as told to and its all clean now.

As requested in the Tools tab I hopefully have taken a screen shot and its here below

I await your next instructions as I am not going to do any more till you tell me.
So when do I proceed with steps 2,3,4,5 and bed.

          Re: External Hard Drives

Curly just saw your question in chat after I had gone. No I'm not on AOL.

I have BT Business Broadband, Internet Explorer and Firefox (the latest version), hope that helps.

              Re: External Hard Drives

OK Sappy, and others watching, here's you file.
Anything marked in red needs removing.
Also as you mentioned you don't use AOL so I would remove them completely with the uninstall part of CCleaner.

Any comments from my selection ?

There isn't any need to have IM start on boot as it's just as easy to fire up when needed, same goes for quite a few other programs as well.

Really all you need at boot is anti-virus, mouse/sound/network drivers and that's about it.
All the schedule updaters can be disabled as well as any "speed" launcher programs. Adobe is good for that.

                Re: External Hard Drives

Hiya Curly I've had a look through those and noticed a couple that cause me concern.

Dell printer 922 - I use that as well as its colour as well as the laser printer that is installed on the pooter which is only black ink.
Memeo Auto - That the external hard drive
Sky - I love me Sky news alerts on the screen
Side Act - Thats the 'programme' that we use for our business it holds all our 'records/addresses/phone numbers' on it
MSN - well who can go without that.

Anyway what would happen if I removed them? would I lose them completely? Would it stop me having that facility? Do I know what I am rambling on about?

Oh I need to have a lay down my head hurts now!

                  Re: External Hard Drives

Del printer app and Act! granted, but the others really aren't needed on start up.
You have already mentioned the the memeo has come to an end, removing this wont stop the drive working.
As for MSN and other IM clients, there is NO reason to have them start on system boot.
Seriously if you want to use them it's a simple case of firing them up when needed.

As for Sky hmm, not really convinced, but it's your choice, similar to IM's above.

                          Try this one: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Choose CUSTOM option and go from there.
Remember there are other updates listed on the right hand side, you want everything except SP3 and IE 7 as mentioned earlier.
