Re: The Join-In IT Query Thead

If it's THAT old, TBH dump it and start over.

You may be very lucky to find a docking station for it, assuming it can take one.
Once the power connector is busted that's your best option.
I've been doing that with my current laptop for several months.
Makes it a bit bulker, but when your using a desktop replacement 4 kg lappie it doesn't really matter much..

Curly, the laptop has photos on there that I don't have anywhere else so I need to get it either rebooted or at least powered up for at least one time removal of the photos

There's more than one way to skin a cat
        • Pull the drive and use an external enclosure for it
        • Acquire a battery for a quick rip
        • Attack it with your soldering iron
        • Use a professional data recovery service

I did similar with one of my hard drives that decided to give up the ghost. There was space on the motherboard for another data cable, so I bought one and attached it to the motherboard, used a spare power cable that was already inside A N Other desktop and it all worked perfectly.

However, it does depend on whether your hard drive actually spins. Does it spin?

Firstly how do I find the motherboard?
I have a packard bell Igo series4000(I think) so do I need to get the back off the computer?

You gonna need to link me to instructions on data cable from motherboard to another laptop as I only have this one as the A N Other so to speak?

Do you know anybody near where you live who could recover this data for you? Or a reputable laptop shop? As long as the drive is spinning and working properly it won't be a lot of money and is quite a simple task.

Assuming the old hard drive has an operating system on it, have you tried to put the old hard drive in your current laptop?

I haven't but i have removed the HDD from the old laptop so is there anyway to check on compatability apart from taking off the back of my laptop?

Re: The Join-In IT Query Thead

From what you have said, it's the power source (from the old laptop) that is the problem. If this is correct, then the laptop you are using now has a power source.

So shut the new laptop down properly, unscrew the HDD compartment on the underside, slide out the caddy and replace with the old HDD. Screw it all back in, power up and it should be fine, or at least you will find out if the HDD is working properly...

In order to get your photos off though you will need somewhere for them to go. Do you have a flashdrive or similar to put them on?
