    consumer-Rights latest news:

The UK’s largest third party website in the British passport industry,BPS which offers a range of value added services such as a passport lodging and collection service which saving the consumer from travelling to one of the 7 regional Passport Offices themselves thus saving them time, travel and potentially accommodation expenses has today announced that it is celebrating 12 months of maintaining its market share of 0.02% of the passport application and renewal industry.
This is in spite of a number of significant changes in the third party website industry. In early 2014 the website has heavily reliant on paid advertising on the major search engines however due to a sudden change in February 2014 it was no longer able to market itself in this way. The website has since been able to evolve and is now less dependent on the traffic of search engines and relies more on the traffic of online affiliate partners and offline marketing methods. Richard Howard of BritishPassportServices.co.uk said the following when speaking of this achievement.
“It has been a challenging year for us. We had to respond to the government officials efforts to ban consumer choice by putting pressure on search engines to banish all competition to their Gov.uk website and have suffered a botched investigation from the Advertising Standards Authority however I am proud to state that our effort and hard work is beginning to pay off and as the largest unofficial third party website I confirm that we believe that 0.02% of all consumers who apply for a passport choose to use our services rather then use services offered by the Post Office or going direct to Her Majesty’s Passport Office. This jaw dropping market share is sure to shock many.”
“We have a bold 5yr plan which some consider ambitious of being able to secure 0.04% of the market. Its going to be tough especially based on what appears to be many agencies agendas which is to eliminate choice and force consumers to use the Gov.uk service directly but we’re going to do our best to gain an extra 0.02% from the 99.97% that is held by the Post Office and Her Majesty’s Passport Office. Furthermore we are finally going to hire someone to correct the grammar on our articles. We are aware that the punctuation on our website is shite and a factor that is holding us back. This will be corrected by the end of the first quarter.”
According to the Passport Office’s 2013-2014 annual report around 5.7m consumers apply for or renew a British passport ever year. It is believed that BritishPassportServices.co.uk is the largest third party website in the British passport industry and based on our analyzing the traffic to other known third party websites who also provide value added services in this industry we believe a further 0.01% of applicants that apply for or renew their passport use another unofficial website and so we calculate the percentage of consumers who use the services offered by the Post Office or process their application directly through Her Majesty’s Passport Office to be 99.97%.

Whist these calculations have not been audited by a third party we consider them to reflect an accurate breakdown of the market share. It is unusual based on the low market share that all third party websites control that some government officials or consumer bodies insist that there is a “problem” with third party websites in the passport application industry. Even if these calculations were not accurate and the market share of unofficial websites was three times what we calculate then the Passport Office and Post Office still controls a 99.91% share. Typically private companies that hold a 40-50% or more of the market are sometimes considered to be a problem and potentially not in the public interest. This is the first time that we are aware of that such a focus has been given to lawful companies in an industry that collectively hold 0.1% of a market.
Some have stated that they do not find it surprising being that the passport industry is worth £450m a year and that it would be expected by government that any threat towards steps to privatize certain elements of the process as the Home Office has done with visa and immigration services would be ruthlessly attacked regardless of public opinion in order to protect the interests of the treasury.

I'd take that as genuinely as I do the one about Ian McDonald ''A consumer was left shocked after an Unofficial Passport Website threatens the consumer with debt collectors & Courts for cancelling a credit card payment for a service they claim to have provided.'' ..... being as Ian McDonald is domain owner of ukpassportexperts.co.uk which forwards redirect to BPS

Home Office Urges Passport Renewals Early This Year

Wimbledon, London (PRBuzz.com) March 11, 2013 -- The Home Office recently issued a plea to those interested in traveling this summer, requesting they make sure to apply for passport renewals early. With the summer season approaching, the number of people applying increases, creating a rush by those who put off the process until the eleventh hour, as experts say happened last year. In 2012, more than one million people waited until the summer months to apply for renewals causing a backlog in the system. To counter problems travellers may have obtaining their passports, The Passport Information Service, an independent passport advice line has been created to field queries on a variety of topics and give information about the One Day Passport.

Says Richard Howard, spokesperson for Passport Advice, "The Passport Advice Line can also provide you with information on passport enquiries, applications, renewals, one day renewal and using the Fast Track 7 day service. It's amazing the number of questions people have and our operators have all the answers, in a timely manner. No more waiting on hold for long periods, either, or facing endless voice mail options. You can speak to a live operator within 30 seconds by calling our 0203 land-line telephone number."

The line, according to Howard, answers a number of questions for those looking for passports. "We are the UK's leading authority in live independent passport advice and can help with answers to many British passport related enquiries. Some of the questions we field include renewal and application questions, reporting a lost or stolen passport, details for travel to the United States, fast tracking your application and passport office locations. Additionally, we help those with issues regarding children's passports, renewals via phone service and one day passport service help. The bottom line is, if you have a question about any issue with your passport, we can probably help you out."

Howard elaborates, saying, "We can provide additional information on the current prices of applying and renewing a passport including the range of services that the IPS offers, including the Fast Track Passport, where by you can in some circumstances receive a passport on the same day. There is also assistance on travelling to the United States in regards to the minimum amount of time required on your passport in order for you to gain entry into the USA. You will also require additional travel documents when travelling in order for you to pass America's border agency security."

                About Passport Advice:
Open Monday through Friday from 9am through 6pm, Passport Advice strives to answer all calls within sixty seconds. Callers will also have the opportunity to leave a message or request a call back where one of the agents will call back, typically within 10 minutes.

Indeed - he does a lot of that press release stuff, think he forgets it stays there for a while on Google.

Paul Giovanni Dui and Ian MacDonald are the others linked to that particular firm, and PaymentCentral .

Worryingly looks like he might start booking peoples driving tests for them too. Which btw you can do https://www.gov.uk/book-driving-test

                        lol just noticed that bit.

Figure wise I think that works out 1140 used BPS in the last year. (is that 0.02% of 5.7million ?)

                        So at least £117.60 off each = £134k ??

I've just had a court letter regarding non payment of £117.60 from UK Passport Services Ltd. I beleive they are misleading people in thinking they are a Government site. I didn't go onto their website I was on the Government site and I got linked to their form, which i thought was a government form. Can anyone help me please?

When you say a court letter - do you mean a N1 claim form ( blue coloured form from Northampton CCBC )?

Also with regards how you ended up on the BPS site from the official Gov site - would you be able to show us the page you were on that linked through to BPS - also when did you complete the form ?

The court letter was notice of issue by County Court Business Centre. The link on the HM Government site has been removed, I filled the form out abut 28th April 2014 (give or take a day).
