  • Re: Ebay & Gumtree Vehicle Scam. Barclays provide Fraudsters Accounts

It took me a minute, literally, to find a new scam. I have dozens and dozens of different search methods but the first one I tried was 'gmx' under Cars, Motorcycles and Vehicles. Note that the box called "Include description" must be ticked. Here's what happened a few minutes ago:-

    The Mini stands out instantly.

    Too cheap
    Zero-rated seller
    User ID matches 'form'

And I should add that I haven't even opened it up to look at it yet. I can tell just from the search alone : That's a scam.

I'm not so sure about that. One of our members who is quite well connected and with whom Celestine and me had lunch with not so long ago was told of this scam by Celestine . He recently e-mailed us to say that he mentioned it to Micheal Gove during an unconnected meeting and that he showed an interest in following it up and said he was going to speak to someone in BIS.

If any of you guys would like me to put you in touch with the member with a view to following it up just let me know.
Hi. We were scammed in January to the tune of £9200 via ebay/ Barclays. Would appreciate you putting us in touch with the person you refer to, thanks

        Thank you.

Nice that Gove knows about us. Still amazes me when I speak to people and they know exactly where I'm from.... and most often sound pleased ? lol. Odd.

Anyway I have jumped the gun a bit and posted up OneEyedJacks brief what to look for - I know Tools is interested in the topic and is doing some work behind the scenes too.

It's only a quick post and we can write a 'proper' article later - just feel this information needs spreading about. Hope everyone is happy with that for the moment.

Regarding the Mini Advert - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2009-Mini-...item19e3ee2193

How do you report it (and others) as a likely scam posting ?

On the right side of the page just above the Item Number it says REPORT ITEM

                Click that.

                1. Report Caregory : Listing Practices

                2. Reason for report : Fraudulent Listing Activities

                3. Detailed reason : You suspect that a listing is fraudulent

And send. It's far from efficient, but it usually works

Give the cloners a number plate to use dso some poor sod gets numerous speeding, parking fines and congestion charges. Then again it takes a dingbat owner to put it out there in the first place, so expect trouble!!!

I will only comment and give advice in situations which I have experience that has been gained over the years in pre legal negotiation and redress. At the end of the day when there is a legal situation of life changing or serious consequence, always and I mean always seek professional advice from a solicitor.

Here are some more scam listings on eBay just from a search for the word 'gmx'

Here is another kind of search. Instead of searching for specific words in the text, it's based on cars of a particular age, mileage and price. I just got three 'hits', all of them listed within the past hour or so

                          The three scams are:-

                          http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2010-BMW-X...item233153c22d

                          http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-Land-...item4acb21dbdf

                          http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-Volvo...item2c752236bf

                          eBay is infested with fraud.

I really don't understand how people get caught out by these scams. I'm not blaming people, because the scammers are quite clever - with their ebay protection and false websites etc.... but - if I ever bought a car (from a showroom / autotrader / ebay ) - in fact probably anything other than direct from the manafacturer and pre ordered a brand new car etc - I would go and see it. All of my cars, barring my first car which came from a forecourt, I have bought on ebay - I've bid, gone to check it out, kicked the tyres a bit, paid in cash, and driven it home, they've all been under £1k (never had a car over £1k) - and the thought of paying someone £4k odd online without having seen what I'm buying, off someone with no feedback, no reviews, and only a mobile number and personal email address, well, it just wouldn't happen. First thing I'd ask would be when can I come and see it. If the answer to that is dodgy then see ya.

Ironically, I think this one's my fault. The scammers were using Yahoo, AOL, Live, Hotmail and so on and a few months ago I was doing some 'baiting' using a different webmail provider so as to avoid detection myself (this lark works both ways you know) - the object of baiting is to secure bank details, which I then pass on to people with contacts in that field. Closing down mule accounts is (in theory) a nuisance for the scammers, but the problem is they have so many - probably over 1000 - that it's just a slight irritation.

Anyway gmx is a webmail provider, you can find them at www.gmx.com or www.gmx.co.uk

And another action I take is to notify image hosting sites such as Photobucket. That BMW in my previous post includes the URL, which is useful:-

                                http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/...psf2707e18.jpg

With this I can get Photobucket to shut down the account within a few hours.

                                It's a full-time job, this.....
