  • Council Tax change of circumstances questions

    Hi,

I moved into my new home about 2 years ago with my mum. We get a discount on our council tax becuase she receives pension credit and attendance allowance.
During the last two years I got married and had child.
However my wife and child and to a lesser degree myself, lived with my inlaws which is not in the same borough as the new home. But we did vist on weekends the new home. This was because we both work near my inlaws and for child care duties.
However my wife and child would now like to live in the new home.
My question is do I have to declare this change of circumstances for the Council Tax and/or the electoral roll. Also will this mean we lose our discount and are there any ramifications because I did not declare I was married and had achile 2 years ago.

    Any advice would be great.

You will probably lose the discount unless your mother is still there and your family circumstances still allow the discount, you will have to ask the council about this, and yes if the council find out you failed to notify a change you could be in trouble. However if you notify the change now and give the current date as date of occupation it it should be OK.

Other Beagles will probably be able to advise further.

      Thanks for the reply.
Yes my mother is still there and to clarify, the change of circumstances has only just happened. My wife was not living in the new home until now. My point being just because we are married, does that mean we had to live in a house owned by myself. We had been living at my inlaws due to work and child care circumstances. I guess that before I tell the council I want to know where I stand.

marriage doesn't mean you HAVE to live together ... if you wife's place of residence has changed from her parents address to your own, then you will need to tell the council
