I do local history online and have had many contributions so its grown and grown and grown.

I bought a 70s book off eBay and I believe the author is now dead. The publisher no longer exists and a namesake, on the south coast also no longer exists or has incorrect contact data online on more than one contact site too.

Where do I stand on taking images etc from the book? I have tried all locations and drawn a blank. ISBN is 0 9502636 7 2

    Re: Copyright

For personal use you can copy up to 5% of a book legitimately. As a general rule, if the author is not well known, the copyright would last for 70 years from the date the book was published. If the author is well known, the copyright would last generally for 70 years from the authors death.

    Hope this helps!

Deja Vu here, I must have asked something similar before but completely forgot. My query is who owns copyright if author dead and publisher vanished down a black hole inkwell?

Can you let us know the author, publisher, book title and year published?

The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield A Commemorative History, by Douglas V Jones published by Westwood Press, Sutton Coldfield

There is a Westwood Press in Broadstairs, Kent but their details online are either old news or incorrectly published.

published 1973, 1979 and 1984 by Sutton Coldfield Corporation - which also does not exist.

I should say printed by as the publishers were Sutton Coldfield Corporation

            Re: Copyright

            I've found these people:

            Westwood Press
            9 Barford Close,
            Sutton Coldfield
            West Midlands
            http://www.locatrade.com/business/GB-276519.htm
            B76 2UL
            08000-851518

I also have the shelf mark for the book if that is of any use, otherwise I'm stuck sorry.

              Re: Copyright

checking it out but the WP locally showed no luck, hmm.

Seen, strange that never came up in my google search? will try them many thanks.

edit: spoke to the number, they have not been WP for 10 years and are now something completely different and they knew nothing about the copyright but I have had one idea, go to BHam Council, which I was going to do tomorrow anyway to their library, and ask them.

                Re: Copyright

Apparantly if the publisher has gone and the author has died the copyright can pass to the estate and onwards to other family. It doesn't appear that it will be a major issue, but I admire you wanting to do it properly.

fairs fair, as I have had a book published, I would expect the same.

I just press the kill (report) botton, you vwxy will be long gone in the morning, i have also reported their website too, so i wouldn't expect that to be around much longer though they will probably find a different hosting company, though i hope they dumb enough to have not backed up the site files lol.

And yes Copyright ownership passing to the deceased holders estate i.e. passed on to next of kin or named person in the will etc.

Ohh and it always exists till upto 70 years after death of the authur regardless of if they well known or not. Can't have one law for some and another for the rest can we now.

And it varies on the copyright granted, hence lesser known authors being granted copyright for the same term, but often only from that date. Some copyrights can be for shorter periods. That's why I put as a general rule, as each case needs the copyright issue looking into in detail.

in your debt people - thanks. Going to Bham Library this morning and will discuss the book with them as Bham took over Sutton Coldfield in 74, so I assume they will have records.
