  • Moving abroad and post forwarding

I'm moving to a EU country soon and am not expecting to return for a long while. Unfortunately when I leave I will lose access to a UK-based address and, unless I find a solution, I'll most likely have to resort to drastic measures such as close bank accounts and the like.

As everyone knows, UK drivers' licence are valid in the EU (at least for now) and so I'm hoping I can keep it and not have to swap it for a new country-issued one. In addition, I have an investment and ISA savings accounts as well as a standard current account, all of which I'm also hoping to keep. Lastly, I'm the founder and sole shareholder of a (for now) dormant company that I would very much rather not dissolve; not now, anyway. Although I'm expecting to not return in a long while, one just never knows what the future will bring and this is certainly a door I think it's wise not to close fully.

I thought of purchasing the services of a UK-based post forwarding service as they claim that my concerns above would be addressed and I'd be able to keep my UK driver's license, bank accounts and even have my mail forwarded to my new address. They claim that all I'd have to do is provide the address of the post forwarding company, however I'm just unsure how this legal would be. Would I be breaking the law?

    Re ISA; https://www.gov.uk/individual-saving...-abroad-or-die

Re investment & current accounts; it will almost be certain that your bank's T&Cs will require you to notify them if you become resident abroad even if you maintain a UK address. Some will keep the account open, but may not accept credits from outside the UK., Check your bank's small print!
I doubt you will be breaking any UK law, it is just that regulations are tightening all the time for banks.

Last time I worked away for a long time I just told everyone my temporary address and no problems.. But that was quite some time ago.

I have a pay as you go PO Box address with UK Postbox and have all my bank stuff going there (mines because I don't trust my postie). They scan the envelope and email me when new mail arrives, anything I need to open they scan for me to view digitally.

When changing your address if you decide to use this or a similar service do something like this, say if your bank was Royal Bank of Scotland:

        Unit 8594
        RBS
        PO Box 5401
        London
        W1A 6US

That way when envelopes are scanned you know exactly who has sent it, so only have to pay to open what you really need to open.
