Hello, My Husband took out 2 crisis loans approx 4 yrs ago and was told he could either pay
it back or as he was retiring in Aug 2017 they could take it from his pension. We never got round
to paying it back and didn't worry as we just thought they would take it from his pension anyway.
However about 12 months ago we started getting letter asking for the money back so my
Husband rang them and said he thought they said they would take it from his pension but
they denied they had said that. He made an arrangement for pay £30 a month till it was paid off.
He owed them £190, they agreed to this and my Husband asked if they could send him giro slips
so he could pay it over the counter at the bank. They said they would send some out to him.
Well we never got them and heard nothing from the DWP again until Aug this year when he got a Letter
saying they were going to put an attachement of earnings on his wages and it would start in Sept.
When he got his wages they had taken £170 so he rang them and they claimed it was a mistake by his
wages dept and was told they would investigate and get back to him. We heard nothing from them. This
caused us financial hardship as we live on a budget.
We did think about complaining but at least its paid off now and what would it achieve.
We want to warn people about this as I do not think it was a mistake.
I think its just a way of getting the money faster as by law they can only
take a percentage but if its done as a "mistake" then its a way round the law.
It really annoyed us as we have never claimed any benefits and have always worked and that was the
only time we needed help from them and they lied to us when taking the loan out and then they take far
more then they are entitled too.
