Married couples and civil partners can register today for a tax break worth up to £212 a year.
In a bid to reward commitment and stay-at-home spouses, the Government is letting eligible couples switch a slice of their tax-free personal allowance between one another.
Everyone can earn up to £10,000 annually without paying income tax, which rises to £10,600 from April 6.
The new rule allows the ‘giver’, who must be a non-taxpayer, to switch £1,060 of it to their other half, an earner paying income tax at the basic 20 per cent on no more than £42,385 over the next tax year. This could save them up to £212 in tax.
Each party must also be born on or after 6 April 1935. The tax break won’t apply until April, but you can register now. The spouse preparing to transfer part of their allowance must register on a government website. Go to gov.uk/marriage-allowance.
There are thought to be more than four million married couples and 15,000 people in civil partnerships who could benefit.
The plans, announced in 2013, were published in last year’s Budget.
