Does an auto immune condition qualify as a disability

Just curious if an auto immune condition thats lasted over 3 years qualifies as a disability and for PIP


Applying for PIP is the initial consultation done over the phone and what are the issues to be aware of?

You’re disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities.

It is not (with a couple of exceptions) the condition itself, but the effect of the condition which qualifies a person as disable.

Initial assessment is by completing a form, most probably followed by a face to face assessment.

The most important phrase to remember is “reliably, repeatedly and safely”.Make sure you state clearly which activities you can not do reliably, repeatedly, safely and in a timely manner, because otherwise it will be assumed you are consistently capable of them all.

As des says, the condition will fall under the equality act 2010. Whether your eligible for PIP though depends how your condition effects your pyshical and mental abilities. For example, if your able to manage your condition with medication where you can as a result carry out day to day physical activities with minimum discomfort or no discomfort. Then you will likely be deemed fit for work and not eligible for PIP. If you have difficulties carrying out day to day chores, then depending on how difficult you find them, your likely to be eligible.

To be honest, without knowing more about your condition and the physical impact it has on your day to day life and movements etc, there is no way we can advise you accurately. And you will need accurate advice as countless people have been wrongly assessed and wrongly told they are not eligible when they were indeed eligible.
