Militant's advice sounds good to me, Nannieali. Housing and Council Tax Benefit are Social Security benefits, but are usually administered by your local council. It may be quicker to pop into your nearest council contact centre or council offices and ask for a H&CTB application form - but do what Militant suggests and pop into the JobCentre as well.

The down side of course is that your daughter will probably have to fill in loads of forms, which can add to her stress. And after that, it can take ages for the wheels to start turning and coughing up a few much-needed quid. But - it needs to be done.

If your daughter is too ill to fill in the forms herself, it is okay for someone else to fill them in for her so long as this is stated in the appropriate section on the form. If she is too ill to go to the Jobcentre or local council offices herself, she can telephone. Also, if you or she visit the DWP website at www.dwp.gov.uk, there is a link named "Benefits Adviser" which will tell her what allowances and benefits she is entitled to claim.

Please be aware, too, my friend, that there is nothing 'fraudulent' about claiming benefits to which we are not sure of our entitlement. To CLAIM any benefit is not in itself fraudulent, and to make such claims is your entitlement under our law. It only becomes fraudulent if and when we make false statements in our claim. So - be bold - but be honest. And do NOT be intimidated by the benefits 'system,' or by those who do not (YET) feel the need to ask for assistance.

If in doubt, make an honest claim. If guilt pricks your soul, then google Fred Goodwin, et al.

                I needed to say that...
