  • Working Tax Credits Query

    Hi all,

just a quick question regarding working tax credits, does the number of children you have have any bearing on how much you get? or is it solely down to how many hours you work and how much you earned in the previous tax year?

a colleague at work seems to think the number of children you have does reflect how much in working tax credits you get but all the info online seems to say otherwise, he says he gets £650 per month for working 48 hours per week, annual salary of £15,000 with 2 children.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, the amount of children you have does have an impact on the allowance you get.

hi thanks Ruby, its confusing as when i do the online calculator on the directgov website the amount for working tax credit doesn't change between 1 and 2 children.

Have you tried the help line number? I know at this time of the year you can wait for ages to speak to someone. It is all rather complicated and very dependant on your own personal circumstances. Typical Gov. Dept. you have to drag information out of them. I have two kids and it did make a diference in my circumstances albeit not much! I kept having to repeat myself that I have two kids not one. Think the person I was speaking to was smoking something not quite legal!

Have a read on the link from direct gov....there may be some help here. It says you do do not need to have children to qualify but if you do have children, you could get extra money to help with childcare costs. For further information see Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit
