Oh they are crap. The main problem is change of circumstances single to joint claims like yours shamen. It is an entirely new claim. But depending on the situation there might be an overpayment on the single claim that was ended when the joint claim was made. Sounds like they got themselves in a right pickle over yours.
I do think its hard when moving from single to joint, if tax credits were your only income before your partner moves in, you suddenly have to rely solely on them until the tax credits are sorted out, and theres no warning about it in all their 'tell us changes immediately' advertising.
