  • MBNA Rejected my claim when long-term sick

    Hi All,

I have had an MBNA credit card for a number of years now (I have recently moved so my paperwork is hidden away at the moment), which I took out PPI on. I had transferred the balance to another card to take advantage of a 0% interest offer. So had no money on the card.

In September I was ill and had to take sick leave. I was a teacher and was on ok money. For the period of my sickness I was on Full Pay and during this period I received a letter saying as there was no balance on the card and I had not been using it they were going to close the account. I then under their advice on the phone found out I could transfer money back onto the card for 0% interest, which I did.

In March I had a final hearing at work and was dismissed, and received ESA, housing and council tax benefits for being ill and unfit for work, so obviously made a claim on my PPI at this point, as I was now unable to work due to illness.

This was rejected because when the date I was first off sick from I had a balance of 0%.

They said they have to go from the date I was FIRST off sick from, even though I was still being paid (approx. £30,000 pa before deductions).

I appealed and again my claim was rejected.

I used the card while I was off sick, as I was still employed and on full pay, not expecting to eventually loose my job.

They have told me the next step is to take it to the ombudsman.

I am now better and looking for work claiming JSA rather than ESA, so will try to claim from March, but don't want to mess up any possibility of getting the PPI for the period I was off sick for, if this may affect it in some way.

Any suggestions or success stories (or horror stories) would be very helpful.

    Thanks,

    Miles

    Hi Miles
Sorry to hear of your experience.

The fact that there was PPI and you were paying for it, then there is a case here.

So you have made the complaint to request for a refund of the PPI and they rejected, so now they said next step ombudsman, so was this the final response in writing where it clearly states its final and now move on to the FOS?
