hi folks after contacting my bank ( northern bank n ireland ) i found that i had ppi on a visa,s card which had been running for 14 yrs , i did not know i even had it , i just thought my monthly statement was showing me charges for repayments and interest charges etc , i have also been self employed for the passed 26 years , and it has been tough trying to keep the doors open because of this i have been on anti-depressants for the last 15 years , the payment was being taken from my buisness a/c at around 20/27 pounds a month all it said was payment to card then the amount , i always thought this was a minimum payment being taken as i always paid cash each month of the card , but the bank said i seen and signed all the correct paper work for ppi and they say they treated me fairly . do i still have a case for a refund or would i be wasting my time . any help would be great thanks in advances peeps .

Re: northern bank refused me a refund .
Hang on, just because you signed the correct paperwork does not mean that the card was sold correctly. You say you were self employed, was there cover for self employment on the PPI?(ie could you claim if you were unable to work as a result of being incapacitated?). If you were on anti depressants was there any clause in the policy that may have prevented you from claiming for illnesses such as depression? Were you made aware of that when you signed up and did they make you aware of this? Was there any other things that you were double covered for, for example, life insurance since before the cover started?
I think you might want to take a step back and check their policy and then check what you were covered at the time the policy was taken out. Which idiot in this world would have double coverage if they had been made aware that they had a policy that covered them

Hi Stephen and welcome to LB
I agree with Leclerc. Just because you signed, that does not mean that you accepted the PPI, or that it was sold correctly.
What I would do is write back and tell them you are not happy they have rejected your complaint, as you have genuine reasons to complain and have every right to make a reclaim on all the PPI you have paid to the account, plus the relevant interest.
Tell them you have recently became aware of the mis selling of the PPI, and strongly believe since checking the account that it applies to you, despite the signing of the agreement, you have your reasons.
If there were pre med conditions at the time it was taken out, it's highly possibly the business will/or would not pay out if you were to make a claim in that respect.
In regards of self employment, this can differ from one business to the other, as some will cover and others will not.
Do ask them for a copy of the policy booklet details of the insurance, they will provide a copy of this free in the post. Exclusions are listed in the document.
If you thought the ppi was all part of the package, do also make that clear to them as well.
What I would like to add though, is with credit card ppi, it's not always as easy or straight forward to reclaim like loan ppi.
They tend to come back and state that you will still be covered for life cover, hospitalisation, job solutions and so on.
I would therefore cover yourself now, if you write back and tell them, you would not be fully protected, and don't believe it's right that you should be paying for a worthless cover that will not fully protect you.
If that was the final decision, give them 14 days as from your letter to review, confirm if you hear nothing or if they do not overturn the decision in this time, you will consider taking these matters further.
It is known that even final decisions can be overturned, depending on what further information you can forward to them, but it may be worth another ask.
Do move on to the FOS if they fail to respond by say 14 or 21 days of the date or delivery of the letter.
Keep at them, and anything else that may apply to you that you think you may have missed, write in the letter to ask them to take everything into account.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on, and feel free to ask for further help.
Good luck.

thanks for that some good points in those posts , gives me hope , the amount i would be owed is frightening , 14 yrs at app £24 per month , and interest the a/c was cleared and closed in 2009 . was thinking of putting my claim in the hands of the payment protection partnership as i am afraid i might handle the hole thing wrong . good move or not what you,s think .

Re: northern bank refused me a refund .
Your very welcome Stephen.
Do you mean a claims company?
Personally we do not recommend using them, as it's just a matter now of you standing your ground with the business, it's up to you, but give it another go, write to them as suggested above, and add any further points if missed, and ask them to review by say either 14 to 21 days max.
If this fails, you always have the Financial ombudsman service (FOS).
And if the FOS upholds in your favour, every penny is yours, and nothing will go to the claims company.
You are almost there with the complaint, and again by moving it on to the claims company, this can take some time, because of starting all over again, where quite a bit of paperwork will be involved.
Keep at them.
