Hi,
I'm new to this forum but need some advice. I'll try and keep it brief.
I bought a house new from the builder in 1998 it is on a small estate and has a management company (Peverel ) who are responsible for maintenance, gardens etc for which there is annual charge collected 6 monthly.
I have never lived in the house it has been with a rental agency who look after finding tenants collecting rent, paying bills etc. For 11 years Peverel have sent their invoices to the agency who have paid the bill and deducted the amount from the rent I receive.
In 1999 the agency was taken over by another, larger agency and all tasks associated with the house were transferred to them.Unbeknown to me Peverel continued to send invoices to the old agency address and despite having a redirection service in place subsequent invoices do not seem to have reached the new agent and consequently have not been paid.
Last week I received a letter threatening from a company called "Property debt Collection Limited" advising me of dire consequences if I did pay £575 immediately.
I am perfectly happy to pay the outstanding amount of £425 but object to the PDC charge of an extra £150.
I have tried discussing with Peverel who say its no longer in their hands because they have handed it to PDC.
I have explained the situation to PDC who aren't interested saying I should have known I owed the money and contacted Peverel to pay.
I have spoken to the new agency including staff who worked for the old agency and they are adamant that the mail direction service worked well.
I have now received copies of the missing invoices and they are all fine but I did notice that they were addressed to me personally but at the address for the agent so this might be why they didn't get forwarded. The agency, however say that they got several letters addressed this way.
It seems to me that all PDC did for £150 is check the land registry, note my address and send me a letter.
Is there anything I can do to contest this exorbitant charge?
Many thanks
