Hi,
Sorry if posting in the wrong forum, I know and understand some others here have much harder situations than me. I just would like to ask for some advice what to do and what to expect.
I'm unemployed, since October.
Previously I earned enough to afford my rent so I had a 13-week protection that ended by this month, during which the council covered 100% of the rent (They don't advise housing benefit claimants who lose jobs that this is available - I found out online, so went in to the council with all my payslips and asked for it. It wasn't disputed though.)
I live alone, am single, no dependants - even no family in this country.
Due to reasons I don't want to bore you with, in real life I am rather introverted - not many friends. I can't share my home (2 years ago I literally became homeless. What saved me from the streets then is having had a job. From this situation I also had tremendous PDL debts I am trying to deal with since and paid off and closed all but two.)
I moved here 6 months ago. My rent contract (assured shorthold) is for 6 months, and I got a section21 served after moving in for the date of 29 February 2014 (I know, the date doesn't exist.) It came with a letter assuring me that this does not mean I have to leave by the date but they (agency) will follow up 6 weeks beforehand to see if we both are happy (LL & me) and then renegotiate the contract. This followup never happened. It caused though that I was extremely fearful disclosing anything of my situation.
In December I disclosed that I have no earnings and don't work ATM.
Rent was paid on time because I used up all I had saved, a friend helped, then the council did the protection payment (but they don't pay it on time to have rent paid timely...)
As of now, none said a single word about the Section21.
Rent for next month is due in 2 days, the Assured Shorthold tenancy can be rolled over (suppose that's the plan since no follow up was made?) into monthly basis. But for the first time I cannot pay rent, with the notice also for this time.
My "income" is £71.70 for JSA / week and £88 housing / week, paid 2-weekly backwards so 2 payments per month = £288+352. (Wow, sounds a lot now, I know.)
My outgoings - I have debts, have to try maintaining..,
- HSBC (see my previous thread....)
- QuickQuid (see other thread, not paying and Defaulted, trying to communicate - update: QQ seems to finally investigate their conduct and reporting...)
- Aqua - CC - paid £68/this month
- Capital One - CC - paid £38/this month
- Barclaycard - they put the CC on hold but that's passed so have to call them, expect to have to pay around £40 to show the required goodwill
- Thames Water & Ecotricity - I arrange Fuel Direct for these, meaning 25% of JSA goes to them, £72 approx / month
- Council Tax £35 / month (after benefits reduction, cannot get lower)
- Three (mobile, need it for jobs, but e.g. no longer calling family at home... they disable services after 5 days of lateness) £40 approx (£38 min.)
- Sky £55 / month (they aren't helpful, and I need internet to apply for jobs but it's part of a bundle contract. They disable services after 4 days lateness and refuse to reduce countracted services as I'm still within the contracted period.)
This is approx £330 total - where I state x amount/thus month that's what I had to pay after talking to them, as minimum payment. These payment results only in extensive chasing on their behalf despite having received it.
I found out I had a mysterious BT bill from my past address when downloading my credit report yesterday - is now in Default, never got the bill (used to pay them by DD!) Called BT, they refuse to discuss, the bill is £96 but the "current amount" with DCA is £122. Have to pay that.
- Commuting (even to JobCentre and it's not reimbursed) about £50/ month - the more interviews the more money spent on commuting.
- I am Gluten Intolerant. My main spending is on proper food, a gluten free loaf of bread is between £2.60-3.60 and I can't eat the white version so count £2.90. Have to maintain a costly diet or I suffer tremendously - because of the stress of this I'm already dealing with some other health issue present since childhood when I'm stressed and very uncomfortable not to mention painful.
The quantitative amounts above are £330 + £96 (hopefully) +50= circa £480
+ gluten-free diet. JSA is £288/month.
I just disclosed this all as I wanted to ask if there's anything a single person with no family can do to get some short term help to pay rent and not be evicted?
While on benefits.
And also, is that Section21 notice even valid or am I fearing something that's not a threat? Though I'd defend even if it is pointless because I have nowhere to go.
As for the job situation -
I am in the interview process for 4 different roles ATM, all within my profession. Applied to over 600, or even 700 by now, no joke - just this month I applied to around 200, different levels (I'm mid-senior but apply to junior roles too). I even applied to Waterstones and different help desks too but they don't want me cos of my experience.
Also I "went through" two jobs without working a day; had an offer recalled after I took it (that's how I became unemployed) and from Dec until 2 wks ago was waiting to be able to start in a role. That's got messed up by my home country embassy - 2 months for this: "I confirm she has no previous criminal records." Lost the job due the waiting time for this. This is European post-kommunist burocracy.
I can't ask the JobCentre for (any kind of) support - I have a nice advisor she's been really cool, and also she was certain by now I'll work. She asked me e.g to register on their website (I know they have no legal grounds to force yet they do with everyone) I gave her access to my notes there cos she was great. But I haven't seen her since early January and the "replacements" are nothing like her.
They are rude and they try to step into eg how much time I spend in my church on a weekday. Besides some of them (the one abusing my privacy re the church for example) is exceptionally unintelligent or uneducated and comes across as negligent, highhanded and narrow minded. They just read through the notes of what I did, comment (if I list I spent x hours helping in the church once, next to 80 applications, 3 interviews and plenty of communication with recruiters) and then they give a new appointment time with yet another stranger I've never met before. My advisor knew of my section21 notice but these lot can't care less.
I advised my LL that rent is going to be late.
I know well I may come off as some whining %^£$%£ and I realise there are people homeless and with much less than what I have, please if you have any suggestions what I could do to keep my home and keep from going to have to go to the court or become evicted, please let me know.
If I knew where to get a truly temporary job (aka one where they don't think I'm not worth it cos I'll leave) please suggest if you have any ideas of sites or anything. I'd be cleaning if I could - but cleaning companies also don't respond to me. Thanks a lot!
