If the disputed amount is £1,800 the claim would be allocated to the Small Claims Track where the winner or loser doesn't pay the other side's legal costs unless there has been unreasonable conduct during the proceedings.
I don't know why the CAB scared you into thinking you would have to pay them.
If it's in the Small Claims Court you should have the opportunity to settle the claim with free telephone Mediation after you've filed a Defence, which although legally binding it's not a CCJ so not recorded anywhere.
(It would only become a CCJ if your breached the terms of the private settlement.)
As advised send a s 77-79 CCA Request and take it from there.
