  • Fianl payment

Morning I had some problems and fail behind with my building maintenance company they went to debt collector.
Then after about a year and a half of paying the collector they came to me and said if i made this final payment of a set amount the debt would be paid in full.
I called and asked 3 times if i made this payment would the file be closed and they confirmed 3 times yes.
So i pulled the money together and paid then. two weeks later after i called a couple of times the sent me a mail to confirm the payment and that the file was closed.
Now they have come back and said that there is still an outstanding amount to pay.
My question is can they do this legally?
