  • HMRC Overpayment

Hi I have had £1536. As an overpayment. This happened from August 2014-March 2015 As I did not tell HMRC that I left my Job in July 2014. i have sent them an appeal regarding this. due to my Uncle passing away with Cancer in November 2014 I also mentioned about this and not being able to contact them. i should have contacted them earlier but it was a tough time for myself. I became self employed in November 2014. What can i do to get this payment cancelled please.

    Re: HMRC Overpayment

I'd say that you will need to repay it ... have they asked you to pay it off in one go? You can usually ask HMRC to allow you an affordable repayment plan by calling them (http://www.stepchange.org/Debtinform...rpayments.aspx)
If you’ve been asked to pay back a tax credit overpayment and you can’t afford to do this within 30 days, you should call HMRC on 0345 302 1429.

If you’ve been asked to pay HMRC directly, the time they’ll usually allow you to pay back the overpayment is either:

    • 12 months – they’ll usually allow you to pay in twelve monthly instalments without giving them any further information.
    • Up to 10 years – they’ll usually agree to this without asking for any further information, as long as you can pay more than £10 a month. If the amount you can afford is less than £10 per month, they may still agree to this if you can afford to pay the debt off in less than three years
    • Over 10 years – you’ll need to provide a budget and pay more than £10 a month. If it’ll take you a very long time to repay the debt, HMRC may consider writing off the debt after 10 years.

If you can’t afford £10 a month and it’ll take longer than three years to pay off the debt, HMRC may agree to put the debt on hold for 12 months. If your situation is the same a year later and you still can’t afford £10 a month, they may agree to write off the debt.
Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

It doesn't matter where your journey begins, so long as you begin it...

      Re: HMRC Overpayment

They agreed to put it on hold for 6 months then now have taken payments for the overpayment. They dont care. I lost an Uncle due to cancer. I was at a bad time of my life HMRC. Well ok I should have told them. Sooner but they dont care. All they care about is getting there money back. I have sent appeals etc i will be taking this to tribunal. I have wrote a letter of complaint regarding the long waiting times etc. I am really unhappy with them.
