  • Ex partners debt

    Hi

I have a problem with an ex partner and her debts.

We lived separately then moved in together. The first week in the new house she stopped me from going inside after I had paid to move her. She then let me back in then had me arrested and asked the letting agent to put the house in her name.

It now turns out that she has lots of loans, credit cards, payday loans and unpaid council tax, bills etc from her previous address. She has also since taking over my house not paid the bills left them as the occupier and not paid the council tax.

The police and my solicitor have told me to pay all her bills and her debts.

I have tried to pay them as instructed but firstly no one can actually believe I have been told to do this. Secondly they will not accept payments from me as they are not in my name. The councils she owes money to have said they will explain the law to the police and my solicitor.

Now whatever my ex has accused me of seems to be all my fault hence being told to settle her debts.

How do I go about paying these and getting the balance from them?

Is this genuine? None of it makes any sense at all.

What did she have you arrested for? Why would a letting agent accept her instruction to transfer a rental property to her name if you were the named tenant?

Why would you ever be responsible for her debts from when she lived somewhere else before you met her? And since when did the police give debt advice?

And why would you be willing to pay her debts now you are no longer her partner and don't live with her?

Sorry but I don't believe this story.

If the last question is genuine the answer is easy. Ask your ex. She is the only person who knows her debts and the details. And if you are offering to pay them she will be delighted to give you the information.

      This is genuine

On the morning I was arrested she rang the letting agent asking for the house to be put in her name as I was in jail. The list is very very long as to why she had me arrested one of which I controlled her money something I have never done. In light of this my solicitor and the police believe I should pay her debts and unpaid bills I'm guessing to make up for taking control of her money.

My ex is unable to speak to me and would not tell me how much she owes anyway.

I do not want to pay her bills and debts when I did speak to my solicitor I was told if I don't pay the bills I will be reported to the police.

When I met my ex she was being evicted from her home told me lots of lies. I helped her get a place. Then once again she paid no bills or the rent. Was about to be evicted so did a runner. We moved in together I took care of the bills so everything was fine. Then she lied about sorting out her old debts bailiffs showed up I left. She took over the tenancy we got back together after a few months. We moved into a new place together well for a week then she called the police took over the house and had the police put restrictions on me. So now I'm homeless and saddled with her bills. She basically got my place without paying out for a place has not put the bills in her name left as occupier. The utility companies are now hassling me for money even though I have told them I no longer live there.

The police and solicitors are saying I have to pay for all her debts and bills as I caused her to be in debt.
