  • Joint Tenancy Debt Query

Hi, I have received a letter demanding full payment of a debt that is in mine and a previous flatmate's name. The flatmate is refusing to and/or cannot repay the debt.

Now I have 7 days to repay this debt which I cannot afford to repay the entire thing I do however have more than half of it but assume regardless of what I pay they will expect me to give the full sum of money.

What is the best steps going forward. Having limited time and lacking the funds I am worried that not only will I have to take on the whole debt but I will also get a ccj against me. Thanks for your time.

If your name is on the debt, you owe all of it.
Try paying say a third, and then offering to pay the rest by small (affordable) instalments.
Have a rather severe word with your former flatmate.
