Hi all,
Hope you are all well. I am hoping you can offer some advice on the following please.
Back in October 2014 I moved out of my previous flat as I broke up with my ex. I notified all the banks and utilities that I had left and that she would be staying on. I called around in Feb to ensure all had the right details and it turned out that Southern Water didn't have the correct information. This was actually due to my ex telling them that all bills should be forwarded to an address she thought I was at.
I don't remember being told there was a final charge outstanding when I called, but as I hadn't lived there since October, had no bills and that my ex had still been living there I assumed that it was all up to date. I didn't receive anything else either. I then moved into my new home in April and since then have heard nothing until yesterday when a debt collector turned up. I promptly declined to talk to him and checked my credit file that showed nothing. I called Experian and they said there were some issues with my file so they would update and I should check today. When I checked there was a default from June for Southern Water.
It turns out that my ex didn't pay the bill and gave them an incorrect forwarding address for me. I called them up today and found out that it was a £60 default.
She took thousands out of my bank account to pay bills and told me she paid them all. Even with that I have no issues paying the debt, I just can't have this default impacting my ability to get credit.
This is the only mark on my credit file and for it to stay on my file for 6 years for such a small amount is really unfair. I am hoping to speak to someone later on but didn't know if there was a better option available?
Sorry for the lengthy post and thank you for your time.
Regards,
Annih
