Recently we have received letters from Advantis claiming that there is a debt outstanding from Thames Water regarding our old house that we were renting. The issue is that in the contract, it states that water is included in the rent and because it was a strange structured house, there was no water meter reading per house (they were several houses and split accordingly apparently). Seeing as we were told before we moved in as well as on the contract stating that water is included, after we moved out, what I assume happened was that Thames Water sent a bill to the landlord requesting the amount and he probably lied and said it was us that are supposed to pay it. He then gave my mothers details to them (incorrect name if this makes a difference, contract was in her name hence why her name was given) and they have somehow found where we moved and sent us a letter with the wrong name (missing one out of five characters as well as one letter spelt incorrectly). We've received two letters now and we were just curious as to what happens next or what we should do about it.
What should be done in this situation?
