Hi all,
Please can I ask for some advice regarding Lowell/Hamptons debt collectors.
A little background:
I had a £1000 overdraft with Halifax in 2006/2007. I was in Uni at the time and was renting a house. At the time I had not went into my overdraft however I moved into another house where the landlord requested all 12 months rent in pre-dated cheques. In hind sight I should have thought this was dodgy but I was 18 and stupid! 1 week later all 12 months rent was taken from my bank account and was also £10 over my £1000 overdraft limit! I didn't realise this for 2 weeks as I was on holiday, by the time I got back by bank had charged me nearly £950 in overdraft fees! I asked for my account to be closed, I had to quit my job / Uni because I couldn't commute / move out of the home 2 weeks later because I couldn't afford to eat - I was devastated. I complained to Halifax and they said that I had shot myself in the foot by handing the landlord the cheques and there was nothing they could do and they would not take the charges off the account.
I have always expressed to Halifax that I had no interest in paying the overdraft fees as it was an extortionate amount. It was then sent on to a debt collector called Moorcroft, I had no money at the time and agreed to pay £10 a week. This went on until 2011/2012 when Lowell group sent me a letter, they said the amount I was paying was insufficient and that they where in the process of taking me to court. I called them and started a repayment plan of £5 a week.
Maybe 4/5 months ago I noticed that the DD for Lowell wasn't coming out of my account anymore... I ignored it.
Now I'm getting constantly hassled by Lowell, then Red, then Fredrikson and now Hamptons - they are all auto messages on my phone, never any 'real' person calling. I have received no letters just phone calls.
The debt also does not appear on my credit profile.... so I assume this is now well passed the date that Lowell can chase me?
What can I do to stop them from chasing me? Have I shot myself in the foot again by even acknowledging them in the first place lol?
I hope that made sense, many thanks
Steph
