  • No debts but chased but debt collectors - Motor Mile Finance

I received a message on my answer phone requesting that if I was 'named person' would I contact MMF on a number given. As no-one of that name has lived in this house since at least 1995 I ignored the call. I received two further messages asking me to make an appointment and threatening to make an unannounced visit if I did not respond, but these calls did not state who they were for. After both these messages I used the companies own website message box to inform them that the person did not reside here, I would not be making an appointment and asked them to remove my details from their files. The last message also stated that I would ignore any further calls. I have today received two more calls requesting an appointment still threatening an unannounced visit, but no acknowledgement of my messages on their website. I have received nothing in writing from them or anyone else regarding debts. As I stated in my Welcome post, my wife and I have never been in debt so this is quite worrying.
A couple of months ago I discovered another debt collector, Mackenzie Hall, had been checking my Credit Report for the same person. After I contacted them by email they apologised and stated that my details were removed from their system.
Am I doing the right thing by ignoring MMF and what rights do they have if they do visit.

Yes, you are doing the right thing, it's not uncommon for DCAs to go on fishing expeditions and chase the wrong person. At work I answered several dozen calls from a DCA asking for someone who had never, ever worked there! I told them numerous times that person was unknown but the next monkey who rang knew nothing about my previous requests to remove the number from their database. :typing:

Most threats of doorstep visits are just that, threats. In the unlikely event somebody actually turned up, they have no more right to be there than your neighbour's dog. You don't have to speak to them or give them the time of day, they are not bailiffs, that's a common misconception the DCAs milk to the full.

MMF and Mckenzie Hall are at the very bottom of the DCA pond life so it's no surprise they should get their cables crossed.

Still getting calls, at least one a day, from MMF requesting we phone (but no names stated) to make a home visit appointment. Thia morning (Sat) they changed tone - 'You must phone this number immediately' - so now it's an order. Still not stating who they want to contact or the reason, just want an appointment for a home visit. I think it must be quicker, easier and cheaper for me to press 'delete' on answer phone than for them to make the calls.

Complain to the CRA to get that removed.

Should not be detrimental to you in theory, as debt collection searches should only be viewable by you. A potential creditor checking your report if you apply for something should NOT see them.

But on principle I would want them off my report just in case. Doing so may also help get rid of the incorrect link between you and your address and this debt, as may be at least in part a reason for MM's mistrace.

But have the mutton-heads at Motor Mouth given any indication that they know your address?

Even if they did, anyone they sent round could do precisely nothing. Remember: unless it is being bought on a HP agreement, doorstep collectors may not collect or remove one's doorstep.

I brought the number with me,this is third house. The person they named in first phone call did live here but, as I stated, has not lived here since at least 1995. What his financial situation was/ is I don't know and is none of my business. As I informed MMF via their website I have no financial connections with or responsibility for him. I assume they want info from me but I believe it is not for me to supply information to MMF about a third party re an unconnected (to me) problem. Since the original call and my response via their website none of the calls have stated who they wish to speak to or why, only that 'you (who?) must call 01138876876 to arrange a home visit'. They have given me no indication that they know my address however it is easily identifiable via various directories e.g.192.com as is the named person - if that is who they are still after. If they do turn up I have no intention of conversing with them apart from requesting they put everything in writing.
Re Mucky Hall in my original post - the search was removed from my credit file. Apart from Noddle my (free) subscriptions to other credit reports has now expired. As I don't get into debt and regularly monitor bank and credit card don't see point in paying subscriptions.
I assume MMF monitor this site?

Many thanks to all of you for the advice

Just been reminded -the named person defaulted on mortgage about ten years ago, faced with eviction, we paid his arrears (we didn't want to see a three year old homeless) direct to bank . However don't know if there were other debts (but on reflection doesn't look good).

I'd forgotten about 192.com as I'm not listed.

I have no idea but, if they do, they'd know that I advise people not to open the door to any doorstep debt collectors but to squirt water through one's letterbox all over the front of their trousers so they look like they've wet themselves. msl:

I am guessing that this person is your son ?
Your relationship to him is irrelevant , he is not you and is responsible for his own debts. If you are in contact you may want to tell him about what is happening.

When I visit my Mum ( I hate using the word mother as it makes her sound old and incapable which she is not) and someone phones asking for Mr xxxx it gives me perverse pleasure in messing with them until I tell them he died over 2 years ago.
