In December of 2010 I received a letter asking me for £96. It never said what the debt was for. I rang the company asking for the debt and after a few snotty comments from the lady on the end of the phone, I found out, that it was for a mobile phone debt from 2006. I told the lady I would be happy to pay the amount if she could send me the documentation to say that I was in fact the owner of the phone they were making a claim for. I said that because of the amount of time that had passed, I couldn't remember if it was mine or not and that I would have had to have signed for the phone when it was delivered and could she send me the documentation with my signature on it. She said that the company asking for the debt might not have this information. I stood my ground and they offered me 10% off if I paid there and then. I refused and said I would wait for their confirmation as stated previously.
At the beginning of April this year, I got a letter from the collection agency saying they were 'no longer instructed in connection with this matter and have returned the account to our client'.
I now have another letter from the same client but using a different 'searcher' asking me to contact them regarding a personal matter. I am no longer at the address they have written to and this letter was passed onto me by my old landlord. It says in the letter that they will continue to use the address as a point of contact.
Can anyone advise me of what I can do to stop them going to my old address but without me giving my new address for now?
Ps I told the original lady that I have no qualms in paying the debt if they prove that it is in fact my debt to pay..
