Hi, I was just about to phone Link Financial after receiving a letter from them about a debt that my son (living in Australia since Aug 2019, with his Australian partner and their child) allegedly has with them but thought I'd try to get a bit more info on them and luckily came across your site! My son is adamant that he doesn't owe any money to anyone. He did have debts (not a huge sum) but cleared all these off in order to get Australian spousal visa, which he now has. He paid for a full credit check/history and he has a good rating.
The letter begins 'We have not written to you for some time as we have had to locate your address'. They have never written to him before. There have been other debt collecting agencies in the past but not this one. There is a Link Reference and account number. The Originator is Bank of Scotland plc (my son swears he has never had dealings with them - and is it even the correct name?) The letter says 'We would like you to contact us on 02920 808610 to confirm your intentions regarding the outstanding balance on your account' and gives alternative numbers and email address mail@linkfinancial.eu
My problem is that it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that my son does have this debt! He has been rubbish with money in the past. But surely this would have been found by credit check people?
Now I've opened it, I don't want to send it back (it was addressed to him at my address; I've only been here 2 years and he has never lived here so not sure how they found it). Should I just ignore it? I don't want trouble for him in Australia.
