  • Payments made in error to a closed credit card account.

A close friend has just found out she's paid several thousands of pounds - via online banking - to a supposedly settled and closed credit card held by her old bank.

Instead of clearing off the card held with her new bank each month, she's been inadvertently making multiple payments to the closed account each time she got a late payment notice from her new card supplier. Careless and stupid, I know and she accepts this. It transpires that the balance of the old card was settled and an email - not a letter - was sent to the bank requesting that the account be closed. On pressing, she says she never got any kind of acknowledgement of the email or that the account had been closed.

Upon 'phoning them up, the old bank told her that the account was closed and had zero balance and that any payments made would have been 'bounced back' to her new bank account, which in itself is nonsense as incorrectly allocated funds actually go into limbo. She only found out that the old account was still active when the old bank suddenly sent her a credit card statement with the £XK payments clearly visible on it!

This has taken place over a three-month period. Aside from the bank having lied and not closed the account, where does my friend stand? I'm sure she'll get the money back but I have said she should charge them interest as well as reprimanding them.

    Any comments?

Hhmmmm...... seems that some USA banks reactivate closed accounts if a transfer is made to them. Not good.
