HI
Just had an interesting phone call. The display said “International”, a female voice said ,”Is that Mr Bard” I said yes she said this is the cooperative bank , we have just intercepted someone who was trying to withdraw all your money from your Coop account via an internet link. I said oh dear, they said, its ok we have caught them in time, I said thank goodness for that. I thought that this was a bit strange because I had cleaned the account out myself last month when I transferred to the Nationwide and I think I left about £3 in it.
She then went on to say that in order to completely block any further attempts to remove my funds she would need my card details. I gave her the expiry date of course (first number I could think of) and then she asked for the long account number. I stopped her then and said, could you tell me if this ever actually works, I mean are there really people so stupid that they would give a complete stranger there account details over the phone, I really wanted to know.
Now the clever bit , instead of just hanging up, which was what I expected, she came over all offended, if you don’t believe me Mr bard just hang up and ring the number for customer services on the back of your card and ask for me.
This confused me for a minute, so I hung up, of course when I reconnected there was no dialling tone, they had not hung up on their end and had the mute on, the idea being that they would wait until I dialled and then take the mute of and I would think it was my bank. I said I know what you are doing and then they hung up.
Leaves the question of how they knew I had a coop account at all. Anyone else had a similar experience?
Peter
