  • Barclaycard suspended for no apparent reason...what to do now?

My Platinum Barclaycard was due to expire in January this year; at the end of December I rang to ask when the card would be sent out and was told that it would be sent before the end of the month, not to worry, and would I like to buy an insurance to protect me when using it online.

In the third week of January, I got a letter from Barclaycard saying that my card was now suspended; I needed to pay off my balance and when my account was clear I was free to try apply again for another card - with no guarantee that I would get it. This came as something of a shock as I had have a Barclaycard for over 25 years, have never spent up to more than half of my credit limit at any time (including currently - what I owe is £3,500 below my credit limit!!!!!!) and have always paid more than the minimum amount without ever missing a monthly payment. WHAT??!!!!!

I rang the Indian call centre and got stonewalled by several phone operators and a supervisor - despite asking why my card had been suspended, no one could tell me. What they COULD tell me was that my card was definitely suspended and that was all. No explanation, no nothing. The supervisor eventually said something about my circumstances changing - huh?!! All I've done is drop 2 hours per week at work. I didn't notify Barclaycard, can't see that they would need to know this or how they would have found out. It was a long, pointless, exhausting and frustrating call that got me precisely nowhere.

I wrote a complaint letter, explaining the situation to Barclaycard (sending it to the person who'd signed the letter to me) and asking for clarification as to why this has happened. Six weeks later and still no response, despite me sending the letter again recorded delivery so I know they've got it.

I went into my local Barclays, who said, no problem, they'd sort it. They looked at my credit records, my dealings with them, told me I was a great customer, that they'd give me a £25,000 loan if I asked for it and had no idea why Barclaycard had suspended my account. All I keep hearing is that I'm a good customer and this must be a mistake. The personal adviser told me that I seem to have fulfilled my side of the contract, so Barclaycard have a responsibility to explain why they are not fulfilling theirs, which I have asked for to no avail.

I wrote and sent a copy of my complaint to the Financial Ombudsman about this two weeks ago, but have had no response yet. I've still had no response from Barclaycard and I'm just stumped as to what to do next apart from sit here and seethe with no credit card.

Anyone got any ideas of who else I can write to or who's cage to rattle to get some sort of response/resolution/explanation?

I'd put all of that in a strongly worded letter to the Chief Executive of Barclaycard and Barclays, and I'd add that you've complained about them to the Financial Ombudsmen, Uncle Tom Cobbly and all.
Then with your great credit rating I'd apply for a different credit card and when Barclaycard have resolved the issue I would tell them to shove their card up where the sun don't shine.
Sorry I don't have anything more positive to say, if you have a Google you'll be able to find out the Chief Exec's details.

Thank you, Sapphire - that sounds like another person I can fire off a letter to who may possibly deign to find a minion to send me a reply!

Thanks for the suggestion - much appreciated! :tinysmile_grin_t:

        .
Suitably 'strongly worded' letter now written and on it's way to the Chief Executive... see if that gets any response! :beagle:

Indeed apply some where else and get a card with an introductory zero rate APR offer and while it in the zero apr pay off barclaycard.

          There loss not yours

BTW nationwide do a zero rate card for 17 mths
If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.

I would send the letter recorded delivery and ask for a response within 8 weeks(timescale to go to the FOS). If they fail to explain to you their reasons then go to the FOS.

Hi Sister M, and welcome, (new myself but a BC old hand battler I'm afraid)

The advice given above is good. Just a couple of questions you need to ask yourself on this. You say that you have had a Barclaycard for 25 years, yes, have you signed any new agreement since then? If not then this takes you back to 1986. I can hazard a guess as to what has happened if that is the case. Barclays do not have, in many cases, the documentation to support your credit card agreement going back this far. They are therefore trying to divest themselves (and recover a bit of money) before you make a challenge. Things have now moved on and it is not good advice to take them to court for unenforceability but should you later decide to not pay them for whatever reason it is still possible to successfully defend any action against you.

Hence as I say BC seem to be trying to resolve some of their problems by forcing new agreements on those with older stuff that they cannot substantiate.

Some good folk on here who undoubtedly will be along.

              regards
              Garlok

Re: Barclaycard suspended for no apparent reason...what to do now?

Well, bizarrely today I received my new Platinum Barclaycard and my monthly bill with the credit limit re-instated - no apology, no explanation, just a new card that expires in 2014. Clearly it was an error on their part which they have now decided to rectify.

I did have a letter acknowledging my complaint a week ago (probably because I took this Forum's advice and wrote to the CEO recorded delivery), so something must have been sorted somewhere... even if they don't want to give me the satisfaction of saying why this happened! Maybe there will be a letter of explanation to follow...? I won't hold my breath.

Thanks for all on this Forum for the advice; it was very much appreciated. :beagle:

Lovely news, personally I'd now be tempted to tell them to shove it, but if you're happy, then I'm happy.

Already applied for a Nationwide card in the meantime - so goodbye Barclaycard anyway!! :tinysmile_grin_t:

I still await an explanation and/or apology with interest...

I've had exactly the same problem as Sister Morticia. I even spent an hour with a Barclays Personal Banker trying to resolve the problem for me. Nothing. All Barclaycard can advise me to do is contact Experian. I know that I have no bad debts but it could mean my identity has been stolen. I have contcted them to get my £2 credit report but going on internet feedback I'm not holding my breath for a response. They seem to prefer you to take out the monthly payment option (what a surprise). It really is poor business practice to set so much store by a credit rating agency that seems to have bad press everywhere you look.

I might just try and get by without a card.
