  • Refund to credit card lost in the ether!

I recently had to cancel my holiday and received a partial refund. I had made installment payments via two credit cards so some was refunded to one and the rest refunded to the other card.

I received the refunds on one of my credit cards a few days ago and even though it was early days i was slightly concerned about the other credit card as the card details that the holiday company had for me were on an old card that i had lost and had replaced. Called the credit card company and was advised that they had rejected the refund issued by the holiday company as the card had expired - however they holiday company say the refund definitely went through and have confirmation from the bank.

The Credit card company still say they declined the refund but are going to raise an internal query anyway which has no timescale on it - meanwhile i want to get my ducks in a row - what will be my next steps if the credit card company insist they do not have it? its only £600 but i really need the money as im cancelling the holiday to have dental work : )

    thanks so much!

    Hi
When you reported your old credit card lost, the card company should have closed your account immediately to prevent fraudulent transactions. There is a difference between an account with a card that has expired (the account is still in operation) and a closed account
Refunds that cannot be matched to an active account are often held in "unallocated funds" or "general ledger" accounts by the card company
You should write to the card company providing them with full details of what has happened. The card company should refund your money to your new account. If you are not satisfied with the outcome you should make a complaint.

Send the holiday company and the Credit Card company a SAR request. Make sure you get Proof of Postage.

The information should help to explain what has 'transpired'.

Thank you for your advice - i just wanted to tie this off as youd so kindly responded to me - today the credit card company credited my account with the amount randomly - despite them
saying they had refused the refund and wouldnt be able to help.

        a win!
